The Loiret [ lwaʀe ] is the French department with the atomic number 45. It is in the center of the country in the Region Center-Val de Loire and is named after the river Loiret named.

geography

The Loiret department is bordered by the Essonne department to the north, the Seine-et-Marne department to the northeast, the Yonne department to the east, the Nièvre and Cher departments to the south, the Loir-et-Cher department to the southwest and the North-west to the Eure-et-Loir department .

The most important river is the Loire , which reaches the département from the southeast, flows through the capital Orléans , which lies in the west of the département, and then leaves the département in a south-westerly direction. The Loing drains the northeast of the department towards the north. To the east is the canal chain of the Canal du Loing , Canal de Briare and Canal latéral à la Loire , which runs in a north-south direction and connects the river system of the Seine with that of the Rhone . The eponymous Loiret is a 12 km long left tributary of the Loire in the Orléans agglomeration.

In the center of the department is the forest area of ​​the Forêt d'Orléans .

history

The department was formed on March 4, 1790 mainly from the eastern part of the province of Orléanais .

It has belonged to the Center region since 1960 , which was renamed Center-Val de Loire in 2016 .
