The Loing is a river in north-central France that runs through several regions and departments . It rises at Sainte-Colombe-sur-Loing at 320 meters above sea level on the heights of the Puisaye . First it drains to the northwest, but then turns to the north and flows into the Seine as a left tributary at Saint-Mammès after around 143 kilometers . From Rogny-les-Sept-Écluses , the Canal de Briare accompanies the river. From Buges , near Montargis , this merges into the Canal du Loing, which continues to run parallel to the river . The Canal d'Orléans , which is currently out of service, also flows here . The canals used to be of great importance for supplying Paris , but are now mainly used for recreational purposes.

Water supply to Paris
In the catchment area of the Loing and its tributary Lunain , a number of springs were taken at the beginning of the 20th century and diverted in a 91 kilometer long aqueduct , the Aqueduc du Loing et du Lunain , towards Paris . The aqueduct joins in the forest of Fontainebleau , west of Moret-sur-Loing , with the other two aqueducts Aqueduc de la Vanne and Aqueduc de la Voulzie . All three together represent the drinking water supply from Paris to the south.
