The Canal du Loing is a shipping canal in the French regions of Center-Val de Loire and Île-de-France . Together with the Canal de Briare , Canal latéral à la Loire and Canal du Center, it forms a chain of canals ( Route Bourbonnais ), which enables barges and pleasure craft to cross from the Seine to the Saône and on to the Mediterranean .
Course and technical infrastructure
It begins just north of Montargis , near Buges , where it connects to the Canal de Briare. The Canal d'Orléans , which is currently closed to shipping , also flows into this intersection . The Canal du Loing generally runs in a northerly direction and, after a length of 48 kilometers, flows into the Loing River at Moret-sur- Loing , which is canalized from here and reaches the Seine two kilometers further at Saint-Mammès . The type of the canal is a side canal that follows the course of the Loing River. It has 19 locks that overcome a height difference of 38 meters. The locks are designed for ships of the standard size Freycinet .
