The Indre [ ɛːdʀ ] is the French department with the atomic number 36. It is in the center of the country in the Region Center-Val de Loire and was named after the river Indre named. Its capital is Châteauroux .
geography
The Indre is bordered to the north by the Loir-et-Cher , on the east by the department of Cher , on the south by the departments of Creuse and Haute-Vienne and on the west by the departments of Vienne and Indre-et-Loire .
The eponymous Indre crosses the department from southeast to northwest and also flows through the centrally located main town of Châteauroux. In the north, the department borders for a short distance on the Cher , which also forms the border with the Loir-et-Cher department. In the west of the department lies the Brenne Regional Nature Park , whose cultural landscape is characterized by a large number of ponds and lakes that have been created since the Middle Ages. The largest river in the southwest is the Creuse .
history
The department was formed on March 4, 1790 from the western part of the province of Berry , the southeast of the Touraine and the north of the Marche .
It has belonged to the Center region since 1960 , which was renamed Center-Val de Loire in 2016 .
