Châteauroux [ ʃato'ru ] on the Indre is a city in central France , capital of the Indre department and seat of the Châteauroux Métropole municipal association .
With 43,741 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), it is the second largest city in the Berry region after Bourges .
history
Châteauroux was founded by Raoul I. le Large, Prince of Déols, who built the Château-Raoul (Raoul Castle) here around 950 . In 1230 Châteauroux received town charter and was initially the seat of a lordship that became a county in 1497 and then in 1616 by King Louis XIII. was raised to a duchy in favor of Henry II of Bourbon, Prince of Condé . This awarded King Louis XV. his mistress Marie-Anne de Mailly-Nesle, who suddenly died in 1744 . In 1790, Châteauroux became the capital of the Indre department.
