Churches

There are three churches in Mesum, two of which are Roman Catholic and one Protestant. The so-called old church in the cemetery is the oldest building in the city of Rheine. It was created around 1350 and is still used today on various occasions by the parish of St. Johannes Baptist. The parish church of St. Johannes Baptist in the center of Mesum was built by Hilger Hertel from 1887 to 1890 in the neo-Gothic style and is the tallest Mesum building at 56.50 meters. After the evangelical community used the old church in the cemetery as a meeting place for a few years, the desire for their own place of worship could only be fulfilled in 1956 with the construction of the Samaritan Church .

Schmachtlappen and Feldpoggen

Statues of the Schmachtlappens and the Feldpogge in the town center

A division of the place Mesum can be made approximately on the railway line Münster – Rheine . To the west of the railroad tracks is Mesum-Feld, on the eastern side of the Mesum-Dorf part, which is the supply center of the place. The residents of the two unofficial districts are called Feldpoggen or Schmachtlappen and were immortalized in the form of two bronze figures by the sculptor Werner Bruning on the square opposite the church. The title of the Feldpoggen and Schmachtlappen can be traced back to the 19th century. Even then there was a rivalry between the two districts. On the one hand the village community, which mainly consisted of simple workers and day laborers and who were abused by the richer peasants for their narrow wallets, and on the other hand the well-to-do farmers mentioned above, who were contemptuously called Feldpoggen by the day laborers, because there were a lot of frogs ( pogs ) in this area . This rivalry still finds its place subliminally in the custom of Mesum.
