Hilger Hertel the Elder
Hilger Hertel the Elder (born November 21, 1831 in Cologne , † January 26, 1890 in Breslau , baptismal name: Johann Vincens Maria Hertel ) was a German architect and diocesan master builder in Münster .
Life
Hilger Hertel did an apprenticeship as a stonemason after passing the Abitur and passed the master craftsman's examination in the stonemasonry and bricklaying trade in the cathedral building works in Cologne . After Hertel had worked in the office of his cousin Vincenz Statz , he was called to Münster by Bishop Johann Georg Müller in 1857 to work there as a diocesan master builder. Since 1864, Hertel had its own construction office and a stonemason workshop at Südstrasse 36 in Münster.
A total of 56 new buildings and over 100 renovations of churches in the Münsterland and the northern Ruhr area can be attributed to him. There are also many secular buildings . The works Hilger Hertel also lists churches in the diocese of Warmia , including new churches in Bartoszyce ( German Bartenstein ) Krokowo (Krokau) Pieniężno (sack of flour), Dywity (Dywity) and Butryny (Wuttrienen) and church restorations in Krekole (Krekollen) Braniewo (Braunsberg ), Reszel (Rößel), Biesowo (Groß Bößau) and Sątopy (Santoppen). In Kolding (Jutland / Denmark) the Sankt Michaels Kirke, built 1882–1885, is from him.
More important but less noticeable were his works on church furnishings and ecclesiastical minor art. The number of altars he designed is between 300 and 400, as are the number of confessionals and pulpits. He also designed around 100 goblets and 40 monstrances .
He was an honorary member of the Catholic student association VKDSt. Saxonia Münster in the CV .
Hilger Hertel was married to Angela, born in 1859. Schraeder, and had three sons with her: the architects Hilger the Younger (1861–1918) and Bernhard (1862–1927), as well as the sculptor Adalbert (1868–1952).
On a trip he died of pneumonia in Breslau and was buried in the central cemetery in Münster , the layout of which he designed himself. His grave has been preserved as a monument to this day.
