Darfeld is a district of the municipality of Rosendahl in the Coesfeld district in North Rhine-Westphalia .

Location and geography

Darfeld lies 14 kilometers northeast of the district town of Coesfeld and 35 kilometers northwest of Münster on the southern edge of a fertile depression between Westerberg and Schöppinger Berg in the northern Baumberge . The calcareous bedrock and the main spring line of the Baumberge offer optimal conditions for agricultural use. The river Vechte , the main source of which is in the Oberdarfeld settlement area, drains the area northwards towards Schöppingen .

The local area includes the village of Darfeld, the settlement centers Höpingen and Geitendorf, as well as the surrounding farming communities Hennewich, Netter, Oberdarfeld and Rockel.

history

Darfeld Castle

The place was first mentioned in 1179/1180. Etymologically, the name probably goes back to the lower aristocratic family Darvelde , first mentioned in 1092 .

The place has had its own parish since 1284 ; At the same time, the parish church of Our Lady , later St. Nikolai, was built . The church, originally built in the Romanesque style, was demolished in 1766 except for the lower part of the tower and rebuilt, as the old church, in the opinion of Pastor Johannes Wiedenbrück, who was in office in 1763, was "more like a hideous, dark prison than a house of God" . The basic structure of the Kirchanger as the nucleus of the settlement was preserved, as were some historical buildings.

Another important architectural attraction is the Darfeld moated castle , which is located about one kilometer west of the village center. The Kleinburlo monastery was also near Darfeld . Darfeld-Rosenthal Monastery was located in Darfeld from 1795 to 1825 .

In 1816 Darfeld was assigned to the Coesfeld district, in 1825 the administrative merger with the parishes of Holtwick and Osterwick and the mayor's office of Osterwick took place, whereby the independence of the parish and the mayor's office Darfeld was retained.

On July 1, 1969, the new parish Rosendahl was formed by merging the parishes of Osterwick and Darfeld. On January 1, 1975, the Holtwick parish was added.

Population and economy

Today Darfeld is the smallest of the three main towns in the municipality of Rosendahl with a population of 2859 (as of 2006). Compared to other places in the Münsterland , population growth has remained low both after the Second World War and since the 1970s. Only in the last few years have new development areas been designated, which contributed to a slight increase in the population.

Darfeld is economically influenced by agriculture , with pig fattening making up the majority. The industrial sector plays a subordinate role with some medium-sized companies in the chemical and construction industries.

Due to the charming location of Darfeld with a historical background, cycle tourism has opened up new, economically interesting perspectives.
