Tower of St. Nicholas in Darfeld

The Church of St. Nikolaus is the Catholic parish church of the formerly independent political community Darfeld , today part of the community Rosendahl in the Coesfeld district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ). After the merger it will be a branch church of St. Fabian and Sebastian in Osterwick. The church square with a rectangular floor plan is characterized by historical buildings on the north and west sides, the less historic houses made of dark red brick and without architectural details on the south side were replaced a few years ago by a uniform investor property. Dorfstrasse runs along the east side.

St. Nikolaus is a baroque hall church with a retracted choir from the 18th century. The nave and the upper floor of the tower are plastered. The Romanesque tower was raised at the time of the new building in the 18th century and provided with an onion dome. Since a hail damage and some contemporary renovations in the 19th century, the furnishings have been influenced by neo-Romanesque styles. A wooden coffered ceiling replaced a mirror ceiling after the hail damage mentioned above. The neo-Romanesque altars were removed after the Second Vatican Council .

The previous building was a Romanesque hall church of small dimensions. Since the ground was lower than the level of the surrounding church square, the nave was often flooded with water. A new building was considered necessary, because the already low vault height / (ceiling height?) Of the Romanesque church would have had too negative an impact on the floor. In addition, the building was described as "dilapidated" as early as the 18th century.
