Coming from the north-east of the Herrenholz forest, the watershed reaches the Visbek parish in the parcel of the pastorate Holz , runs between the Papenloh residential area and the Kehnmoor in a north-westerly direction, and follows this direction between the Twillbach drainage ditches and the Wöstendöllen farmers to the Weißes Moor area . There, the course turns west to the Schwarze Höhe (Höge) corridor , from where it follows the Döller Damm road northwards to Astruper Strasse . From this point the course of the watershed follows Astruper Straße to the west to Kreisstraße 334 ( Visbeker Damm ), further along the Visbeker Damm in a south-west direction to the level of the Hundenschlatt corridor, where it turns west-south- west to the Feldhaus Fels residential area , where it turns on west-northwest, passes the hamlet Meyerhöfen on its southern edge, and leaves the area of the municipality of Visbek west of the village of Halter . The watershed runs further to the northwest, between Vehne and Lethe , towards the North Sea coast. Of the springing in Visbek lowland streams flowing Aue including the proceeds generated Twillbäke besides Visbeker Bruchbach in a northerly and easterly direction over the Hunte to the Weser , as did - to the east - the Lohmühle Bach and Denghauser Mühlbach while the Vechtaer Moorbach with its tributary streams Spredaer Bach , Lutter Mühlenbach and Schlochter Bäke flows in a south-westerly direction over the Hase of the Ems .

history

Neolithic to Middle Ages

The "heathen sacrificial table" in Engelmannsbäke (Endel)

The area was, as evidenced by the numerous large stone graves of the Neolithic Funnel Beaker Culture (TBK) (3500–2800 BC), inhabited at the latest since the Neolithic . In the recent past, archaeological finds have come to light during earthworks - mainly during sand mining and the development of new building areas, most recently in the Uhlenkamp II building area in 2011 and 2012. These traces show settlement and burial activity since the Neolithic .

In addition to the Neolithic finds from the funnel beaker culture, the Saxon-early medieval burial ground of Visbek-Uhlenkamp is of great interest. It stands out due to its almost complete coverage and its occupancy, which extends into the early 9th century. So it falls in the period of Christianization . It comes from a time when Abbot Gerbert Castus founded a mission cell in Visbek, which was to become a regional mission center in Lerigau for half a century. With the excavation of Visbek-Uhlenkamp, the prehistory and early history of the region merged directly into the history of Visbek.

The Visbek Abbey was first mentioned in a document in 855, when Ludwig the German gave the "Klösterlein" ( cellula ) to Corvey . In contrast, the award document to Emperor Ludwig the Pious , dated September 1, 819 , which mentions a place fiscbechi , is a complete forgery in which the Abbey des Castus and the churches subordinate to it are granted complete tax exemption. While this document was only considered to have been falsified for a long time, it has been considered a forgery from the late 10th century since 2012. The considerations derived from the forged document that Visbek could have been a bishopric-like mission cell since 800 at the latest can no longer be substantiated.

From 855 at the latest, the Benedictine Abbey of Visbek and its possessions in the mission area, which also included the subordinate farmers, were subordinate to the Corvey Monastery through a documentary donation from Ludwig the German , whereby this document is now not a total forgery, but only in parts (with regard to the Taxes, ie tithing ) is regarded as falsified. It was also regulated that all future acquisitions made by the Visbek missionary cell fall to Corvey. The Corveyer forgeries may be seen here against the background of gaining further rights and income through backdated total forgeries and falsification of genuine documents.

Place name Visbek : The older forms of the name Visbek, namely Fischboeki (855), Visbichi, Visbacht, Visbechi (11th century), Visbike (1120), Visbich (1147/1149), Visbeke (around 1150, approx. 1200) and Visbike (1195/1198) prove the meaning of the name as Fischbach .

Modern times

With the acquisition of the former Grafschaft Ravensberg-Vechta by the bishopric of Münster in 1252, Visbek also became politically owned by Münster. However, it was not until 1666 that the bishop of Münster also obtained ecclesiastical sovereignty over the Niederstift Münster - d. H. the area of the offices of Vechta, Cloppenburg and Meppen - which the Diocese of Osnabrück held until then.

The overnight stay of Emperor Napoleon I in a sheepfold built in 1811 in the Varnhorn peasantry is more of a side note in history . The emperor is said to have spent the night there on one of his campaigns in the so-called French period (1811-1813) - during which Visbek belonged to the French Hanseatic Département de l'Ems-Supérieur (department of the Upper Ems) - because of a wheel damage to his carriage . However, there is no guarantee that this was actually the case.

Through the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss of February 25, 1803, the Protestant Duke of Oldenburg gained state power over the Oldenburger Münsterland , which encompasses the offices of Cloppenburg and Vechta - including Visbek, but whose population has remained predominantly Catholic to this day. Until 1946, the Oldenburger Münsterland remained part of the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg or (since 1919) of the Free State of Oldenburg . During this time it was also called the Münsterland Geest. The Oldenburger Münsterland has been part of the state of Lower Saxony since 1946 . Even after the aforementioned Reichsdeputationshauptschluss of 1803, the bishop of Münster remained the spiritual head of the Catholics in the Oldenburger Münsterland. Since the 1820s, the Bischöflich Münstersche official in Vechta has been his permanent representative for the entire area of the Oldenburger Land, which according to the law of the Catholic Church still belongs entirely to the diocese of Münster. As a worldwide unique institution in terms of state church law, the Bischöflich Münstersche Officialat represents the executive power (potestas executiva) of the bishop like a general vicariate. From 2001 to 2016, auxiliary bishop Heinrich Timmerevers (1980–1984 vicar and 1989–2001 pastor of the Catholic St. Vitus parish Visbek) the office of the official in Vechta.

Until the end of the Second World War , Visbek was almost exclusively Catholic and is still predominantly today. Only at the time of the Reformation was the Oldenburger Münsterland from 1543 under Bishop Franz von Waldeck influenced by Protestants. At that time, the Protestant reformer Hermann Bonnus worked in this region . In the course of the Counter Reformation under Bishop Ferdinand of Bavaria , the region was recatholicized in 1613. With the end of the Second World War, refugees and displaced persons from the former German eastern regions came to the municipality of Visbek. Many of these expellees were Protestant. In the course of the following years, due to the strong increase in the demand for workers during the period of great economic growth after the Second World War, which led to the massive recruitment of so-called guest workers abroad, members of non-Christian creeds also settled in the municipality of Visbek since the late 1960s , especially people of Muslim faith.

The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Vitus was built from 1872 to 1876 by the architects Hilger Hertel the Elder. Ä. (Münster) and Franz Xaver Lütz (Osnabrück) built as an east - facing three - aisled neo - Gothic hall church in red brick. It rises at the highest point of the village, in the center of the village, and can be seen from afar, even from the farmers . The tower, which is equipped with five bells (c sharp, d sharp, e, f sharp and g sharp), has a height of 65 m including the tower cross, while the outer length of the building is approx. 53 m. The interior of today's church has an area of 30.50 × 22 m. The length of the choir is 13.30 m. The church can accommodate around 800 people. The sculptor Johann Heinrich König (1705–1784) from Münster (Westphalia) created six life-size sculptures, of which those of the four church fathers probably originally belonged to the high altar . Two other sculptures depict Mary with the child and John the Baptist . On the monastery square, on the north side of the church, there is a bronze sculpture by the Osnabrück cathedral sculptor Willi Witte from 1984. It depicts Abbot Gerbert Castus, the priest Folcard (a colleague of the Bischofs Willehad ) and a companion of the two, Count Emmig.

The Evangelical Lutheran Emmaus Church was rebuilt in 1997 according to the plans of the architects Grundmann + Hein from Hamburg. The way the windows are arranged is of great importance for the spatial effect. The rounded back wall of the chancel is highlighted by a skylight. The cross in front of it is in the light, while the other walls appear more shady. The entire height of the chancel wall is set off from the side walls of the nave through colored windows. The church windows were made according to designs by Ms. Grundmann-Wienert, Hamburg. A church wall is adorned with tapestries by the Swedish artist Annelie Machschefes. Up until the time the church was rebuilt, there was a Bartning diaspora chapel ( Otto Bartning ) at the same place as an emergency church , which was built in 1953 and found a new location in Sudargas / Lithuania in 1996 . Bartning'sche Notkirchen existed in the Oldenburger Münsterland apart from Visbek also in Steinfeld (Oldenburg) until 1982 and they are still in Bakum and Garrel (as of 2014) .

The Lourdes Grotto on Astruper Straße in Visbek was built in 1906 by a Visbek citizen out of gratitude for the recovery of his seriously ill wife. The stones for the grotto were brought from the south of France. The wood-carved statue of Our Lady comes from Oberammergau . The Visbeker Grotto is similar in shape and material to the world-famous original grotto in southern France near Lourdes .

The Way of the Cross of the Catholic parish of Visbek was built in 1856. Since 1955 the Way of the Cross has shown station pictures made of fired clay, created by the Bremen sculptor Kurt Lettow (1908–1992). Every Good Friday the believers walk the Way of the Cross singing and praying along the Visbeker Bruchbach to the XII. Station on Ahlhorner Strasse.

On May 4, 2018, the permanent exhibition "ArchäoVisbek" was opened in the house of the Visbek home association. The project was funded by funds from the European Union's LEADER budget , which were made available in 2016. The ArchäoVisbek offers insights into the archeology and history of Visbek and presents historical evidence and finds from the major excavations in Visbek in recent years. It should be a cross-generational and supraregional place of education and learning. Archaeological and historical exhibits are presented, e.g. B. to the change of the burial culture from the megalithic tombs to today and to Christianization in the region. The subjects of half-timbered construction and technical progress in the craft are also highlighted. One of the highlights of the exhibition is a horse grave.
