The art in the roundabout (also roundabout art ) has proven to be since the 1990s genre of public art developed and is an important application field of architectural art in transport construction. In the case of roundabouts with a central island that cannot be driven over, art objects are a common design variant in addition to planting in this area, which is generally not accessible to pedestrians.

In Switzerland , the art of the roundabout has a long tradition. In Switzerland, the costs for planning, construction and structural maintenance are usually borne by the local authority. After many traffic lights have been replaced by roundabouts in Germany and Austria since the 1990s, the central islands are increasingly being designed artistically.

Legal basis

Traffic safety must not be impaired in the artistic design of the roundabout . In the implementation of an EU directive with the aim of reducing the number of road deaths, works of art are also checked in roundabouts. In Baden-Württemberg, individual works of art were then removed from roundabouts in the out-of-town area.
