history

After Charlemagne built nine mission districts from 780 AD to Christianize the conquered Saxons , Abbot Gerbert Castus - the apostle of the Oldenburger Münsterland - founded the first parishes in the area from the Visbek mission cell . One of these is the parish church of St. Johannes Baptist Bakum, the oldest church to be founded in the south-west of Lerigau .

Epitaph of the extinct von Voss family in the parish church of St. Johannes Baptist

The first officially mentioned farms were in the year 890 in today's Elmelage and Hausstette and around 970 in today's Carum. In the 11th century the name Becheim appears for the first time, which then changed to Bakum via Bachum, which can be considered a Latinized form of the name.

Up until the 13th century, there were nine noble residences in the Bakum municipality. After that, the number of seats was reduced to one, Gut Daren. The fortress Lohburg in Lohe, a robber baron's castle surrounded by a swampy and impassable valley , was destroyed in 1374 by troops of the Münster bishop Florence von Wevelinghoven because of its dubious reputation . When the von Voss family died out in the male line, the Bakum estate passed into non-aristocratic hands. An epitaph of the von Voss family can still be seen in the entrance to the parish church of St. Johannes Baptist.

The "Lagerbuch Amt Vechta" from 1769 mentions seven "knight seats" in the parish of Bakum (listed in the spelling of the time):

  • the knight seat of Backum (owner: the von Ascheberg family )
  • the knight's seat in Dahren (owner: the von Frydag family )
  • the knight seats Harme and Norberding (owners: the von Galen family )
  • the knight's seat Lohe (owner: the von dem Bussche family )
  • the knight seat Sudholt (owners: the von Plettenberg family ) and
  • the knight seat Sudholt Raden (owner: the catholic church)

religion

The vast majority of the residents are of Roman Catholic faith and form the parish of St. Johannes Baptist in Bakum. The churches of St. Vitus in Vestrup, St. Josef in Lüsche and St. Johannes Ev. in Carum are branch churches of the parish Bakum. The parish belongs to the Münster deanery Vechta. The Evangelical Lutheran Christians make up the Gethsemane parish. Your church is the Gethsemane Church , a Bartning-Notkirche D type . The Gethsemane parish belongs to the ev. Church district Oldenburger Münsterland.
