Voss (Lower Saxon noble families)
Voss , also called Vos in early documents, in Latin Vulpes or Wlpes, is the name of several families of lower nobility from north-west Germany. Three of them led a red fox in a golden field: the Voss family from Vechta, the Voss family from Diepholz and the Voss zu Päpinghausen family.
A relationship with the Mecklenburg family von Voss (also with the eponymous fox in the coat of arms) and the Altmark Voss could not be established, but because in the course of the eastern colonization many colonists including the lower nobility from Westphalia, Lower Saxony and the Benelux in what is now East Germany and Poles immigrated, a relationship would not be unthinkable. In addition, first names as well as Johannes, Heinrich and Friedrich are represented by the Voss from Mecklenburg and from the Osnabrücker Nordland in the earlier generations.
History of the Voss from the Oldenburger Münsterland and Osnabrücker Nordland
This family appears in 1220 with Johannes Vulpes as a witness for the Counts of Ravensberg in Vechta. The family was or became resident in the neighboring Osnabrücker Nordland. Most of the goods were along the way from Quakenbrück to Bersenbrück. There the family split into two lines. The older line was located at Burgmannshof No. 5 (Loxterhof) and a younger line at Gut Mundelnburg .
The older Voss line owned the following goods (× = building demolished) : Voss Burgmannshof (No. 5) alias "Loxterhof" , Loxterhof 2 in Quakenbrück. (× 1964) In possession from 1389 to 1666. Burgmannshof (No. 10), Langestrasse 18 in Quakenbrück. In possession since the end of the 17th century - 1748. Gut Hamm (×), also known as Vosshamm, Vosshagen or Hammerhof in Nortrup. The family house has been in the possession of the Museumsdorf Cloppenburg since 1977 . In possession from 1584 to 1666. Gut Vossdiek, Diek (= pond), Vossberg or Vossburg in Langwege (×, 1877). In possession from 1519 to 1677 Hof von Hammerstein zu Loxten (×), Seminarstraße 33, City of Osnabrück. Owned in 1666. Hof von Voss zu Böckel (×), Hakenstraße 12, City of Osnabrück. In possession since the middle of the 17th century - 1705. Good Laer near Melle. In possession before 1649–1666
Gut Böckel or "Voßböckel" in the Bieren district with Kilvernsche Mark and the Obermeierhof in Schwenningsdorf. In possession around 1555 (1540?) - 1763. Gut Altenböckel or "Hakenböckel" (×) in the district of Bieren, south of Gut Böckel. In possession around 1662–1763. Good wooden latch (×), probably on today's Klinkstrasse (?) In Bünde. In possession from approx. 1650–1711. Gut Groß-Eickel near Blasheim. In possession from 1747 to 1765 Gut Klein Eickel near Blasheim. In possession from 1747 to 1765
Vellinghausen Castle in Vellinghausen between Hamm and Soest. In possession from 1700 to 1748 Haus Heidemühle / Hudemühlen (×), in Hamm-Uentrop. In possession around 1699–1748.
The younger line Voss was established at: • Mundelnburg (×) in Borg / Wasserhausen. In possession from 1350 to 1727 Voss Burgmannshof (No. 4) "Vosshagen" or "Elmendorffhof" , at Markt 6 in Quakenbrück. In possession from approx. 1486–1727
Gut Bakum zu Bakum around 1527–1731. (×) Gut Südholz / Sutholt-Tribbe zu Bakum around 1600 ~ 1631. (×)
Gut Ertbrügge in Nellinghof (×). In possession until approx. 1440.
coat of arms
The Voss zu Quakenbrück led a striding red fox in gold. This is repeated on the helmet.
History of the Voss from Diepholz
This family lived in Diepholz on Gut Münte from the early 16th century until the late 19th century. In the Max von Spießen collection, the progenitor of Voss zur Münte, the Landdroste von Oldenburg-Jever and later Drost zu Diepholz Cord Voss (before 1523–1587), is connected to the Mundelnburg branch. According to recent studies, this should not come from Quakenbrück ; The Mundelnburg line also does not name the line of origin in the series of aristocratic samples of the German Order.
coat of arms
Like the Voss family from Quakenbrück, they ran a natural gold fox. However, a jumping fox both on the helmet and in the shield. The shield bearer and the motto were probably not included in the coat of arms until the 19th century.
Bearer of the name of Voss zur Münte
- Curt Andreas Adolph von Voss (born April 15, 1788 in Diepholz; † October 14, 1858 at Gut Münte in Diepholz) was a German district administrator, administrative lawyer and politician in the Kingdom of Hanover.
History of the Voss zu Päpinghausen
The Voss zu Päpinghausen from the Minden area appear in Minden documents from the first half of the 13th century to the early 14th century. After that, the trace is lost and the family seems to have died out in the male line. This family was up to an upright fox with a drooping tail.
