Quakenbrück , first mentioned in a document in 1235, is a former Burgmannsstadt and in earlier times served the Diocese of Osnabrück as a security to the north. Burgmannen defended the former episcopal state castle on the Hase with their ten Burgmannshöfe .

Three Burgmannshöfe are still preserved - at Marktplatz, at Pfaffenstrasse 18 and at Mühlenstrasse 30. However, they no longer have the appearance and size from the time of the city defense, when they were provided with strong defensive towers and outbuildings.

Burgmannshof No. 1, Mühlenstrasse 30

Only one wing of the von Dincklage family's Burgmannshof at Grosse Mühlenstrasse 30, which forms an ensemble with the old mill, has survived.

Burgmannshof No. 4, Markt 6

The Burgmannshof Vosshagen , also known as Elmendorffhof , is located on the market square (Markt 6) and initially belonged to the Voss zu Mundelnburg family, as evidenced by an inscription, and later to the von Elmendorff family , whose coat of arms is on the gable. There is an Italian restaurant in the renovated building. In front of the courtyard is a rural sandstone fountain from the 18th century.

Burgmannshof No. 5, Loxter Hof 2

The striking Loxter Hof had to give way in 1964 in the euphoria of innovations of the post-war period to a modern building in which a medical center is located.

Burgmannshof No. 7, Pfaffenstraße 18

The Burgmannshof at Pfaffenstraße 18 was named Grothaus ' scher Hof after its owner and bears the coat of arms of the Dincklage-Langen families from 1735. The courtyard, which was laid out to protect the Große Mühle, is probably the oldest two-story half-timbered house and was later merged with the Elmendorffhof and sold to Schulenburg. This as well as the Grothaus'sche Hof were allod , while all other Burgmannshöfe were fiefs of the Bishop of Osnabrück.
