Carl Ludwig Niemann (born January 18, 1830 in Bakum , † December 2, 1895 in Cappeln ) was a German pastor who also worked as a historian and local researcher.

Life

Carl Ludwig Niemann was born as the son of Anton Niemann and his wife Maria Elisabeth. Diekmann was born. He attended the Antonianum Vechta grammar school from 1844 and then studied Catholic theology and philosophy at the University of Münster from 1849 . In 1851 he moved to Rome to the Pontificium Collegium Germanicum et Hungaricum de Urbe . He completed his studies in Rome in 1856 with a doctorate . He was ordained a priest on June 2, 1855 and then came to Cloppenburg as a chaplain in 1856 . There he founded the Higher Citizens School in 1858 , which he headed as rector until 1874 . From September 13, 1881 until his death, he worked as a pastor in Cappeln.

Scientific work

In close cooperation with the Lord Chamberlain Friedrich Kurd von Alten , Niemann endeavored to research the prehistory and early history of the Oldenburger Land and joined - like von Alten - the Oldenburg Regional Association for Classical Studies founded in 1875 . He wrote numerous works on historical and local history topics for newspapers in Vechta and Cloppenburg as well as for the Oldenburg yearbook. His main work is the presentation of The Oldenburger Münsterland in its historical development , published in 1889/91 , which is based primarily on the publications of Carl Heinrich Nieberding . In contrast to the latter, who still saw the Oldenburger Münsterland in a spatial context with the Niederstift Münster , Niemann represented the own identity of the Oldenburg Münsterland region existing within the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg in his representation, which lasted until 1803 . With this and through his studies, which he deliberately wrote for a broader audience, he made a significant contribution to the popularization of the country's history and the development of a regional identity.

Honor

In 1890 he was awarded the Cross of Honor, associated with the Grand Ducal Oldenburg House and Merit Order , without the 1st class swords.
