Carl Heinrich Nieberding (born October 1, 1779 in Steinfeld ; † April 11, 1851 in Lohne ) was a German administrative officer who was also active as a historian and politician.

Life

Carl Heinrich Nieberding was born as the son of the carpenter and tax collector Carl Heinrich Nieberding (1753–1836) and his wife Maria Catharina born. Dorgelo († 1819) born. After attending grammar schools in Vechta and Osnabrück from 1792, his parents brought him home to prevent Nieberding from becoming an officer. Subsequently he was assistant clerk to the court secretary in Vechta. In self-study he prepared for the notary's examination, which he passed in April 1798 in Münster. In 1799 he became the brands - fiscal ( wood estimation officials ordered the Office Vechta) and Vogt in Lohne. As a result of the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss , Vechta and Lohne fell to the Duchy of Oldenburg in 1803 . Nieberding was confirmed in his offices and made the new government extensive suggestions for improving the future administration.

During the French occupation of the duchy from 1811 to 1813, Nieberding was mayor of the city of Lohne and also served as a tax collector, surveyor and official translator. In 1815 he became the Obervogt appointed and Amtseinnehmer in Steinfeld. In 1817 he was also a commissar of publicity . Nieberding campaigned for the cultivation of the heather and moorland as well as for the improvement of the economic situation of the heuerlings . He dealt intensively with questions of agriculture and published numerous articles on new cultivation methods and measures to increase the value of the soil in the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg . In the same year he joined the Freemason Lodge "To the golden stag". In 1823 he was one of the founders of the Vechtaer Filialgesellschaft and was also a member of the Oldenburg Agricultural Society , whose secretary and first chairman he later became. As part of his professional activity, he took over the management of property tax assessments in the Damme office in 1832 and was also a member of the replacement commission for the landlord's rights in the Vechta office . In 1847 he was given the honorary title of State Economics Council for his various services, including the promotion of road construction .

Nieberding was also politically active and was elected to the Oldenburg state parliament in August 1849 . There he campaigned for the connection of Oldenburg to Prussia .

In order to be able to support his large family, Nieberding pursued a number of paid secondary jobs in addition to his professional tasks. He worked as a surveyor and building expert, prepared cost estimates and drafts for private and public buildings and managed several aristocratic estates since 1798 . The knowledge acquired during these professional and part-time activities, as well as access to archival material, formed the basis for extensive regional research. As a historian he dealt with the historical development of the Münsterland and wrote a. a. a history of the Niederstift Münster , a treatise on the town history of Cloppenburg and an outline of the settlement history of Drentwed . In his biography, Hans Friedl describes him as the real father of Oldenburg-Münsterland historiography , the history of the Niederstift Münster , although unfinished, being his main work. He also worked as an editor of saga collections. In total, he published around 150 essays on political, legal, social and cultural topics.

Nieberding is considered a pioneer in peatland archeology . In 1812 he published reports on "newly discovered old military routes through the moor near Lohne" on the basis of the investigations he had carried out on boardwalks in the Great Moor . In doing so, he examined numerous prehistoric monuments and discovered a number of castles , entrenchments and land defenses .

Nieberding had Maria Catharina born on October 28, 1800 Wittrock (baptized 1779; † 1844) married. She was the daughter of the mayor of Cloppenburg, Georg Otto Wittrock (1732–1809) and Anna Catharina born. Surkamp (1748-1809). The couple had twelve children.

Honor

The "Nieberding-Schild" is named after Carl Heinrich Nieberding, the highest award of the city of Lohne after being granted honorary citizenship . The “Nieberding shield” is awarded every two years to deserving citizens of wages.
