The Lüsche polder is a floodplain in the Lower Saxony district of Vechta and is located south of Lüsche and north of Carum in the municipality of Bakum . The official registration number of the nature reserve is: "NSG WE 162". As the lower nature conservation authority , the district of Vechta is responsible for managing the polder . The polder was built between 1966 and 1974, opened in 1978 and placed under nature protection in 1985.

description

The 38 hectare protected area consists of an artificially created retention basin , which is mainly fed by the water from the right tributaries of the Hase . Immediately to the north of it flows the Bruchbach, the Steinbäke to the west and the Fladder Canal to the south . Within this basin, very varied water and vegetation structures have formed. Birds, insects and amphibians benefit from the protected area, as do molluscs and many plant species that are bound to wet conditions.

The water surface of the polder is a maximum of approx. 30 hectares; the water depth is 2 to 3 meters. The storage capacity is 900,000 cubic meters of water. The polder can be hiked around on an approximately 2 km long circular dam. The nature reserve may only be entered from the top of the dike.

Retention basin

Due to the lack of stability, the polder was denied the ability to safely hold back water masses by the Lower Saxony Ministry for the Environment and Climate Protection. The dam supervision in NLWKN has ordered the closure. The flood protection system is currently no longer safe; Woody vegetation and burrowing animal infestation endanger the dams of the facility, and there are no dam defense paths.

The state of Lower Saxony is planning to transform it into an "uncontrolled polder". For this purpose, the inlet and outlet structures are to be removed, but the dams are to be retained. This jointly applied for the Hase-Wasseracht and the NLKWN. The documents for the planned approval procedure will be publicly available in June and July 2018.

Suitability as a nature reserve

Without being used, the area began to become overgrown and natural stocking with forest trees began. From the point of view of nature conservation, a mosaic of open water surfaces, grass corridors, bushy areas and individual groups of trees is desirable. That is why the central area of the polder has been grazed by a small herd of cattle for many years in order to maintain open spaces. At the foot of the dike, on the other hand, the woody plants could develop undisturbed for a long time. Therefore, the fishing association Vechta took years before the initiative and has consistently in annual recurring work assignments sections along the water areas entkusselt . Sometimes machines from the Hase-Wasseracht were also used to clear the willow bushes that had already grown into the water surface. Particularly in the south and west of the polder dike, clearing the banks of woody trees served to ensure that the water surface was again better supplied with oxygen when exposed to wind.

Connection between the Lüsche polder and the Fladder Canal (flowing from left to right in the background)

From April 1st to July 15th, all fishing is prohibited inside the polder. During this time it is only allowed to fish from the outer dike between the entrance and the intake structure.

Fish stocks

The fish population consists of pikeperch , pike , tench , eel tadpole , bream , rudd , carp , common carp , eel , perch , roach , hazel , gudgeon and crucian carp .
