Herrenholz is the name of a nature reserve in the Lower Saxon communities of Goldenstedt and Visbek in the Vechta district , but also the name of the state forest , in the northeast of which the nature reserve is located, and of an FFH area to which the nature reserve belongs entirely. The Herrenholz is located between Visbek and Goldenstedt in the south of the Wildeshauser Geest Nature Park . The western, smaller part with the corridors Wetschenholz and Füchteler Holz south of the Schlochter Bäke as well as the area north of it to the corridor The pastorate wood is located in the area of the municipality of Visbek, the larger, eastern part with the corridors Buchholz, Breitenbruch, Herrenholz, Dieken Hester, Stubbenkamp and the nature reserve lies in the municipality of Goldenstedt. Several streams touch or flow through the Herrenholz. The upper reaches of the Twillbäke bounds the area to the northwest. The Schlochter Bäke crosses the southern Herrenholz from north-west to south-east, where it takes in a spring stream that rises on the northern edge of the nature reserve. As a topographical feature, the Weser-Ems watershed between the source streams of the Twillbäke and the Schlochter Bäke cuts through the corridor Das Pastorat Holz through Herrenholz in a north-easterly direction.
State forest
The forest area between Goldenstedt and Visbek covers about 700 hectares. It was mentioned as early as 819 under the name “Princely wood on Hollwedehusen” in a letter of protection from the German Emperor Ludwig the Pious . The Hollwedehusen farmers only existed until the end of the 15th century. Since the forest was later used by the princes and lords for hunting and logging, it was given the name "Herrenholz".
Nature reserve
The nature reserve with the registration number NSG WE 085 is 32 hectares in size. A total of 21.2 hectares of the nature reserve have been designated as a natural forest reserve since 1972 .
The nature reserve places a near-natural old beech and oak forest under protection. In the part of the protected area designated as a natural forest, the forest is left to its natural development, the remaining part of the protected area is managed with the aim of developing and maintaining a natural forest.
The "Herrenholz Primeval Forest", one of three remains of the Hutewald that still exists in western Lower Saxony, has been under nature protection since April 30, 1953. On March 21, 1987, the nature reserve was renamed "Herrenholz Nature Reserve" and enlarged. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the district of Vechta.
