The western Dümmerniederung is a nature reserve in the Lower Saxon town of Damme and the municipality of Steinfeld in the district of Vechta , the municipality of Bohmte in the district of Osnabrück and the joint municipality of Altes Amt Lemförde in the district of Diepholz .
The nature reserve with the sign NSG WE 262 is 1,432 hectares in size. Of this, 993.1 hectares are in the Vechta district, 436.3 hectares in the Osnabrück district and 2.6 hectares in the Diepholz district. The nature reserve is for the most part part of the EU bird sanctuary "Dümmer". A small part is also part of the FFH area “Dümmer”.
The area has been a nature reserve since March 22, 1952. With the current ordinance of December 14, 2007, an approximately 125 hectare area of the “ Dümmer ” nature reserve , which overlapped with the “Westliche Dümmerniederung” nature reserve, was deleted. The area remains part of the “Westliche Dümmerniederung” nature reserve. The nature reserve borders in the east on the nature reserve " Huntebruch and Huntebruchwiesen " and parts of the nature reserve " Dümmer, Hohe Sieben and Ochsenmoor ". Due to the three nature reserves, a large part of the Dümmer lowlands is protected by nature conservation law. Responsible lower nature conservation authorities are the districts of Vechta, Osnabrück and Diepholz.
The nature reserve is located west of Hunte and Dümmer in the Dümmerniederung. It is characterized by fens with as pastures occupied and mowing pastures grasslands , wetlands and wet meadows, Hochstaudenfluren , large sedge Riedern , reeds and isolated swamp forests in the area of Osterfeiner Moore in the north and the frilly Moor in the south of the protected area.
