The Borsteler Moor is a nature reserve in the Lower Saxony municipality of Borstel in the Siedenburg municipality in the Diepholz district and in the Pennigsehl municipality in the Liebenau municipality in the Nienburg district .
The nature reserve with the sign NSG HA 178 is 495 hectares . The Diepholz district accounts for 480 hectares and the Nienburg district 15 hectares. The area has been a nature reserve since June 6, 1996. The responsible lower nature conservation authorities are the districts of Diepholz and Nienburg.
The nature reserve is located south of Borstel between Sulingen and Nienburg . It puts the northern part of the Great Borsteler Moor, an extensive high moor in the Diepholzer Moorniederung under protection. At the time when it was placed under protection, peat was industrially excavated in the center of the bog . The areas will be renatured after the end of their use. In the edge area of the nature reserve there are agricultural areas in addition to being mainly grassland , occasionally also arable areas , as well as numerous unused areas that are mostly covered with bushes.
The moorland is mainly drained via ditches to the Siede , which is a tributary of the Great Aue , which in turn flows south of Nienburg into the Weser . To the west of the Siede is the “ Siedener Moor ” nature reserve . To the south of the nature reserve there is a large peat extraction area in the Great Moor in the area of the Pennigsehl community in the Nienburg district.
