The peripheral areas of Lichtenmoor are a nature reserve in the municipality of Heemsen in the joint municipality of Heemsen and the municipality of Steimbke in the joint municipality of Steimbke in the district of Nienburg / Weser .

The nature reserve with the registration number NSG HA 234 is around 155  hectares in size. It is completely part of the 359.01 hectare FFH area "Lichtenmoor", which also includes adjacent areas in the Heidekreis district that are designated as the " Lichtenmoor " nature reserve . The nature reserve has been under protection since November 17, 2016. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the district of Nienburg / Weser.

The nature reserve, which consists of six sub-areas, is located northeast of Nienburg / Weser . It places forest and moor forest communities adjacent to the “Lichtenmoor” nature reserve under protection. In the north and west of the protected area, predominantly structured pine and mixed pine forests grow on sandy soils of flat dunes . In the wet dune valleys relics are of high moorland biotopes and swamps to find. To the west are sandy heaths with broom Gentiles stocks to find. In the southwest, the nature reserve is characterized by drained raised bog, on which contiguous areas of bog forest with peat moss grow. To the east, the nature reserve extends along the White Trench, which separates it from the "Lichtenmoor" nature reserve. Here there is a mosaic of rural Handtorfstichen , small, well-preserved transition and quaking bogs with wool grass and peat moss and peat bog degeneration stages. Scots pines and moor birches continue to falter in places , forming small areas of moor forest. Finally, bog heaths with stands of bell heather can be found, which merge into sand heather with common heather in drier areas. Areas previously cultivated as grassland are included in the nature reserve. Forest areas and adjacent grassland areas are hunting grounds for the Great Mouse-eared Mouse .

Raising the water level is intended to improve the living conditions of the flora and fauna typical of bog in large areas of the nature reserve and to restore forest and bog biotopes worthy of protection. Furthermore, decussing measures are carried out to maintain and develop the area.
