The area, which consists of two sub-areas, is located northeast of Nienburg and northwest of Steimbke in the Lichtenmoor . It places a raised moor area under protection, which has been industrially pelted over a large area in the south-western area . These areas are in the process of being renaturalized. a. Rewetting measures carried out - or have been cultivated into moist grassland . In the north-eastern area there are unused peat birch forests , old hand peat cuttings and grassland areas of different intensity of use, as well as isolated fields and forest areas.

In addition to the regeneration of the industrially pitted areas, the focus is on optimizing the wet grassland as a habitat for meadow birds. In the structurally rich sub-area in the north-east of the protected area, an extensification of the use of agricultural land and a gradual conversion of arable land into grassland is planned in order to achieve an ecological upgrading of the protected area.

The protected area is traversed by the Alpegraben and Weißen Graben, which also drain it. The Alpegraben flows in the direction of the Alpe , the White Graben over the Schwarze Riede to the Wölpe . Both the Alpe and Wölpe are tributaries of the Aller .
