Edward Peter Cullen

Edward Peter Cullen (born March 15, 1933 in Philadelphia ) is former bishop of Allentown .

Life

The Auxiliary Bishop of Philadelphia, Francis James Furey , ordained him a deacon on September 23, 1961, and the Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia , John Joseph Krol , ordained him a priest on May 19, 1962 . After various positions as chaplain and head of church social services, Cullen became Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia in August 1988 .

Pope John Paul II appointed him auxiliary bishop in Philadelphia and titular bishop of Pariah in Proconsolare on February 8, 1994 . He was ordained episcopal by the Archbishop of Philadelphia, Anthony Joseph Cardinal Bevilacqua , on April 14th of the same year; Co- consecrators were John Patrick Foley , president of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications , and Francis Schulte , Archbishop of New Orleans . He was named Bishop of Allentown on December 16, 1997, and was appointed bishop on February 9 of the next year. In 2003 he became one of the Trustees of the Catholic University of America .

On May 27, 2009 Pope Benedict XVI. his age-related retirement.
