John Patrick Foley
John Patrick Cardinal Foley OESSH (born November 11, 1935 in Darby , Pennsylvania , USA ; † December 11, 2011 there ) was a Curia Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church . As President of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications, he was Chief Communications Officer of the Holy See for over 20 years and known as the "Voice of the Vatican". From 2007 to 2011 he was Cardinal Grand Master of the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem .
Life
After studying Catholic theology and journalism , Foley received the sacrament of ordination on May 19, 1962 through John Joseph Cardinal Krol in Philadelphia . In the following years he was active in pastoral care and eventually became director of the church newspaper The Catholic Standard & Times for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia . In 1976 Foley was made an honorary papal prelate .
Pope John Paul II appointed him Titular Archbishop of Neapolis in Proconsulari on April 5, 1984 and appointed him President of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications . The episcopal ordination donated to him on May 8, 1984 also John Joseph Cardinal Krol; Co- consecrators were Martin Nicholas Lohmuller , Auxiliary Bishop in Philadelphia , and Thomas Jerome Welsh , Bishop of Allentown .
After the death of John Paul II on April 2, 2005, as with all heads of the Vatican dicasteries , his office was initially extinguished in accordance with the Codex iuris canonici . Pope Benedict XVI however, confirmed him at the beginning of his pontificate in this function. On June 27, 2007 Benedict XVI released him. as President of the Council for Social Communications and appointed him Pro- Grand Master of the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem .
On November 24, 2007, Benedict XVI took him. as a cardinal deacon with the title deaconry San Sebastiano al Palatino in the college of cardinals . On December 22, 2007, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him. cardinal-grand master of the grave knights. After the resignation of John Patrick Cardinal Foley, who resigned for health reasons, on February 10, 2011 as Grand Master of the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem, Giuseppe De Andrea and the Governor General of the Order, Agostino Borromeo , were appointed as Papal Assessor for the meantime. Benedict XVI. accepted on August 29, 2011 Cardinal Foley's resignation from the office of Cardinal Grand Master of the Order of the Holy Sepulcher for health reasons and appointed the previous Archbishop of Baltimore , Edwin Frederick O'Brien , as his successor.
The Grand Master of the Order of Malta , Fra ' Matthew Festing , awarded Cardinal Foley the insignia of the Grand Cross of Honor and Devotion on April 22, 2010 in Rome; Foley had been chaplain of the Order of Malta since 2002.
