The Congregation for Divine Worship and the Order of the Sacraments ( Latin : Congregatio de Cultu Divino et Disciplina Sacramentorum ; also Liturgy Congregation ) is a central authority ( dicastery ) of the Roman Catholic Church that deals with matters relating to liturgical practice and the sacraments the Roman Catholic Church and its affiliated Uniate Churches .
Roots and development
At the beginning of 1588 Pope Sixtus V announced in the Apostolic Constitution Immensa Aeterni Dei the establishment of the Sacred Congregation for Rites (Latin Sacra Rituum Congregatio ), which existed for almost four centuries before it was dissolved in 1969. She established norms for the execution of the worship service ( rite ); Furthermore, canonization processes were one of their tasks. In mid-1908, by decree of Pope Pius X. in the Apostolic Constitution Sapienti consilio, the Holy Congregation for the Order of the Sacraments (Latin Sacra Congregatio de Disciplina Sacramentorum ) was brought into being, in whose tradition (“direct succession”) the present Congregation sees itself . Around 60 years later, around the middle of 1969, Pope Paul VI decreed . in the Apostolic Constitution Sacra Rituum Congregatio the division of the previous "Rites Congregation" into the Holy Congregation for Divine Worship (Latin Sacra Congregatio per Cultu Divino ) on the one hand and the Holy Congregation for the Process of Canonization (Latin Sacra Congregatio per Causis Sanctorum ) on the other. The process of reorganizing the congregations for the (overlapping) areas of rites, liturgies, sacraments and canonizations seemed to be over.
But only a few years later, in 1975, the Apostolic Constitution Constans nobis Paul VI. the Holy Congregation for the Sacraments and Divine Worship (Latin Sacra Congregatio pro Sacramentis et Cultu Divino ) was founded, in which the "Sacraments Congregation" established in 1908 and the "Liturgical Congregation " established in 1969 were merged. Thus, instead of the three “pillars” (sacraments - liturgy - canonization), which had initially been reorganized, there were only two (sacraments / liturgy - canonization). Another decade later, Pope John Paul II divided the area of sacraments / liturgy into two branches, the Congregation for the Sacraments (Latin Congregatio de Sacramentis ) and the Congregation for Divine Worship (Latin Congregatio de Cultu Divino ) their respective leadership, however, the same prefect (first Giuseppe Casoria , then Paul Augustin Mayer ).
Finally, in mid-1988, 80 years after the gradual dissolution of the "Congregation of Rites" begun by Pius X, John Paul II in the Apostolic Constitution Pastor Bonus brought both congregations he had previously divided back together into one, the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Order of the Sacraments (Latin Congregatio de Cultu Divino et Disciplina Sacramentorum ), and laid down their tasks (in Articles 62 to 70 of the Constitution). First Cardinal Prefect was Eduardo Martínez Somalo ; Francis Arinze served from 2002 to 2008 . Antonio Cañizares Llovera was Prefect of the Congregation from 2008 until he was replaced by Robert Sarah at the end of 2014 .
In 2001 the Vox Clara Committee was founded; It is responsible for the liturgical texts in English and coordinated the retransmission of the Roman Missal into English in the 2000s according to the translator's instruction Liturgiam authenticam from 2001.
