July 20, 1969 he received in Conakry , the ordination . At the Gregoriana in Rome he obtained a licentiate in theology and at the Pontifical Biblical Institute with a year abroad (1971) at the Studium Biblicum Franciscanum in Jerusalem also one in biblical studies. In 1974 he returned to Africa. From 1976 he worked as a teacher and director of the Minor Seminary in Conakry, from 1978 as private secretary of the Apostolic Administrator of Conakry, Louis Barry.

On August 13, 1979 Sarah was by Pope John Paul II. As successor to the Confessor Bishop Raymond-Marie Tchidimbo the Archbishop of Conakry in Guinea appointed and received on 8 December the same year by Giovanni Cardinal Benelli , the episcopal ordination . At the age of only 34, Sarah was the youngest Catholic archbishop in the world at the time. In addition, Sarah later served as President of the Episcopal Conference of Guinea. On October 1, 2001, Pope John Paul II called Robert Sarah to Rome and appointed him secretary of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples .

Under Pope Benedict XVI.

Bishop Sarah was born on September 23, 2009 by Pope Benedict XVI. appointed member of the Second Special Assembly of the Synod of Bishops for Africa (October 4 to 25, 2009). On October 7, 2010 Benedict XVI appointed him. as successor to Paul Josef Cordes as President of the Pontifical Council Cor Unum .

In the solemn consistory of November 20, 2010, Pope Benedict XVI accepted him. as cardinal deacon with the title deaconry San Giovanni Bosco in via Tuscolana in the cardinals college .

On November 7, 2012, Pope Benedict XVI. Cardinal Sarah as the special envoy for the Middle East. In Lebanon , he met representatives of the Syrian churches and Syrian refugees. In addition, he initiated the coordination of support for Catholic aid organizations.

Under Pope Francis

On November 23, 2014, Pope Francis Robert appointed Cardinal Sarah Cardinal Prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Order of the Sacraments for five years . As such, Cardinal Sarah sees the thoughts and liturgical initiatives of Pope Benedict XVI. Committed.

In a speech to the Synod of Bishops in October 2015, Cardinal Sarah lamented “today's Western views on homosexuality and abortion” and “Islamist fanaticism” and compared them with the fascism of the National Socialists and communism of the 20th century. Sarah was considered one of the spokesmen for the conservative wing at the synod and appeared as the spokesman for the African bishops. He also advocated a clear condemnation of gender theory .

Regarding the West’s policy towards Islamist terrorism, Sarah said: “How many deaths does it take for European governments to understand the situation in which the West finds itself? How many severed heads? "

On July 5, 2016, Cardinal Sarah called on the priests to celebrate the Eucharist again towards the east ( ad orientem ), or if necessary (in western churches) towards the apse , as was done by the Pope , at the beginning of the liturgical year 2016 Benedict XVI. had been advocated. A few days later the Holy See informed that some of Cardinal Sarah's statements had been misinterpreted in a way as if he wanted to announce new regulations that differed from the previous rubrics with regard to the celebration of Mass in the ordinary form and the celebration versus populum distinguished. That direction of celebration should be preferred wherever possible.

In October 2017, Pope Francis publicly contradicted Cardinal Sarah's highly restrictive interpretation of the papal motu proprio Magnum principium , with which Francis in the previous month - amending the translator's instructions Liturgiam authenticam (2001) and the CIC - gave the bishops' conferences extensive competencies in the formulation who had awarded liturgical texts in the national languages.

In clear distancing from the immigration-friendly position of Pope Francis, Cardinal Sarah warned on the occasion of the publication of his book Le soir approche et déjà le jour baisse in March 2019 of the "fall of Europe, including its culture and values, should (Islamic) mass migration continue"

Since the current cardinal protodeacon Renato Raffaele Martino is no longer eligible to vote at a conclave, Sarah, the longest-serving cardinal deacon currently (as of June 8, 2018), would have the task of proclaiming the election of a new Pope.

In his book Des profondeurs de nos cœurs , published in 2020 , Sarah speaks out against changing the priests' celibacy obligation. The book contains a contribution by Pope emeritus Benedict XVI .; The indication of Benedict's picture and name on the book cover and his signature under the preface and epilogue gave the impression that the whole book was written together with the former Pope Benedict. Commentators interpreted Sarah's work in advance as a defense against a possible admission of married permanent deacons in the Amazon region to priestly ordination, as recommended by the so-called Amazon Synod in October 2019 . Benedict XVI. pointed out that he was not the co-author, and his private secretary, Archbishop Georg Gänswein , had both the picture and the name removed on behalf of the Pope Emeritus. The Cologne domradio commented on the choice of the time of publication of the book, which was before the publication of the post-synodal apostolic letter Querida Amazonia , that this had "a certain explosiveness" and took the position that Benedict was being abused "by his environment".

In a report by the conservative news portal kath.net , Robert Sarah was supposed to be one of the signatories of an appeal on May 7, 2020 with the title “Veritas liberabit vos!”, In which, on the pretext of the Covid 19 epidemic, many citizens had rights and fundamental freedoms Would be “disproportionately and unjustifiably restricted”; Public health should not become an alibi "to free civil authorities from their duty to act wisely for the common good". In the text, doubts are expressed about the actual risk of infection by the coronavirus and the reporting on the pandemic is referred to as "alarmism". Robert Sarah stated on May 8th that he had not signed the petition.
