Conakry [ kɔnaˈkri ] (formerly Konakry ) is the capital of Guinea . With 1,667,864 inhabitants (as of March 1, 2014), it is the largest city in the country.
geography
The city emerged from a small fishing settlement on the island of Tombo off the Kaloum peninsula in western Guinea in the Atlantic Ocean . With increasing importance as the seat of the administration of the Rivières du Sud colony , the place also developed into an important trading center. Finally, Tombo was connected to the peninsula and thus also to the mainland through embankments.
At the beginning of the 20th century, Conakry was a magnificent city with sandy beaches and promenades and tree-lined boulevards. At that time it was often referred to as the “Paris of Africa” or “Petit Marseille”. In the course of the 20th century, Conakry of Kaloum, as the former island was called, expanded further and further to the northeast onto the peninsula. It now included the districts of Matam, Dixinn, Matoto and Ratoma. In 2015, the extension in this direction inland was about 35 kilometers.
climate
The climate in Conakry is extremely warm. The annual average temperature is 26.6 ° C and it is between 25 and 30 ° C all year round. The amount of precipitation is 4296 mm per year. The dry season lasts from November to May.

Conakry is the economic center of the country. The city has an international airport and a major port on the Atlantic . Among other things, bananas , iron ore and bauxite are shipped. The port handling was 1997 3.739.463 tons, since the expansion of the port in the early nineties for container ships of the second generation also takes the container handling resistant.
In 2008, the branch of the French logistics group Necotrans , Getma, was granted a concession to expand and operate the port. This concession was revoked by decree in 2011 due to non-compliance with contractual obligations. A few months later, a 25-year concession for further expansion and operation was awarded to the Bolloré company. In mid-March of the same year, Getma filed a criminal complaint against Vincent Bolloré with the Paris public prosecutor. He is accused of funding the successful election campaign of the President of Guinea, Alpha Condé in Jare 2010. The investigative proceedings initiated as a result are discontinued. In October 2013, Bolloré was sentenced by the Nanterre Commercial Court to pay Getma 2.1 million euros as compensation for port extensions that had already been carried out.
