More recently, the Nzérékoré region and the prefectures bordering it in the north have been affected by refugee flows from neighboring Sierra Leone , Liberia and Ivory Coast because of the civil wars there.

population
The number of residents has grown rapidly in the last few decades. The censuses showed (1983) 740,128, (1996) 1,348,787 and (2014) 1,578,068 residents. Between 1983 and 1996 there was an annual population growth of 4.4%. In contrast, the number of residents only grew by 0.9% annually between 1996 and 2014.
Of the population (2014) 762,301 were male and 815,767 (51.7% of the population) were female. Only 368,596 people (23.4% of the population) lived in urban areas in 2014.
The region is linguistically very fragmented. The dominant languages at the state level, Poular (also Peul; 3.5% of the population), Malinke (9.2% of the population) and Sussu (0.3% of the population) are only minority languages in the region. The main languages in the Nzérékoré region are Koniaka (24.4% of the population), Kpèlé (23.4% of the population), Kissi (15.4% of the population), Toma (7.8% of the population) and Kono ( 4.9% of the population).
While the other regions of Guinea are almost completely Islamized (89.1% nationwide in 2014), this is not (yet) the case in the Nzérékoré region. Islam (46.7% of the population) and Christianity (28.1% of the population) have increased significantly in the last fifty years. However, significant parts of the residents are still followers of their traditional religions. And many Muslims and Christians practice a mixed religion of old and new faith.
