Faranah is a region of Guinea and has an area of 35,581 km². It is located in the middle of the country, bordering Mali in the north and Sierra Leone in the south. Their capital is the Faranah of the same name . The region had 941,554 inhabitants at the last census in 2014 and is still sparsely populated with 26.5 inhabitants per square kilometer despite strong population growth.
The Faranah region is largely located in the geographic region of Upper Guinea ; only the prefecture of Kissidougou in the south is counted as forest Guinea . The Niger River has its source in the Faranah Mountains .

Significant places
The most populous town in the region is Kissidougou with almost 100,000 inhabitants. Other major cities are Faranah, Dabola and Dinguiraye.

The number of residents has grown rapidly in the last few decades. The population censuses showed (1983) 425,160, (1996) 602,845 and (2014) 941,554 residents. Between 1983 and 2014 there was an annual population growth of 2.5%.
Of the population (2014) 450,823 persons were male and 490,731 (52.1% of the population) persons were female. Only 203,828 people (21.7% of the population) lived in urban areas in 2014.
The region is linguistically very fragmented. The languages Malinke (36.3% of the population) and Poular (also Peul; 27.9% of the population), which also dominate the state level, are the most important languages. Other important languages in the Faranah region are Kissi (13.2% of the population), Landouma (12.3% of the population), Djalonké (6.7% of the population) and Lélé (2.3% of the population).
Like most regions of Guinea, the region is almost completely Islamized (89.1% nationwide in 2014). Islam (89.1% of the population) and Christianity (9.7% of the population) have grown significantly over the past fifty years. Only small parts of the residents are followers of their traditional religions. But many Muslims and Christians practice a mixed religion of traditional and new faith. In addition, as everywhere in West Africa, Sufism has a significant following.
