Kouroussa is a prefecture in the Kankan Region in Guinea with about 159,000 inhabitants. Like all Guinean prefectures, it is named after its capital, Kouroussa , which had 10,141 inhabitants in 1996.

geography

The prefecture is located in the east of the country and covers an area of ​​12,035 km², which mainly consists of savannah and is traversed by the Niger .

population

Kouroussa is inhabited by the Muslim ethnic groups Malinke and Dialonke . In the city there is a monument to the French explorer René-Auguste Caillié , who was the first European to discover Timbuktu in 1828.

economy

In Kouroussa rice, onions, millet, peanuts, sesame and cotton are grown and cattle are raised. The city used to be an important trading center for wild rubber and gold. Today rice, which is grown in the fertile Niger Valley, is exported.
