Kindia is a prefecture in the same region Kindia in Guinea with about 286,000 inhabitants. Like all Guinean prefectures, it is named after its capital, Kindia , which is also the capital of the entire region.

The prefecture is located in the west of the country, on the border with Sierra Leone , and covers an area of 8,828 km².

economy

Kindia prefecture has larger fertile agricultural areas. Rice, bananas, pineapples, citrus fruits and palm trees are grown there for palm oil production.

In Friguiagbé , which is 13 kilometers southwest of Kindia, bauxite has been mined by the Russian mining company Rusal since 2001 and transported by rail to Conakry , where it is shipped from the port. In 2018, 3.2 million tons were mined and exported. About 800 people are employed. The Babandou bauxite mine in Débélé near Mambia, which is also exploited by Rusal, is located around 40 kilometers southwest of Kindia.

Since Guinea's independence from France in 1958, the socialist government under Sekou Touré had turned to the Soviet Union, which has been shown in good relations and cooperation with Rusal since 2000. An aluminum refinery was operated in Friguia until 2014 in order to extract the alumina aluminum oxide.
