The inhabitants belong mainly to the ethnic groups Malinke , Guerzé (Kpelle), Mano (Manon) and Kono (Konon), which in 2001 were estimated at 55,000 people.

Because of the civil wars in the neighboring countries, many refugees live in the region; In the 1990s this was even several 100,000, in November 2004 the figure was 73,000 according to the UN Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) , of whom another 10,000 had returned to their home countries by the end of 2005. The UNHCR has an office in the city of Nzérékoré; there is a state hospital and a Roman Catholic mission station.

In the summer of 2013, the postponed elections sparked violent conflicts between the various ethnic groups, which left 76 dead in the city and 22 more victims in Koule. In addition, at least 160 people were injured. In the context of the controversial parliamentary elections and the constitutional referendum of March 22, 2020, violent clashes occurred again, with around 10 dead, 90 injured and major damage to property. A group of the Muslim Konianke, a sub-ethnic group of the Malinke, attacked the Wessoua district, where predominantly Christian kings live.
