Kankan is a city in eastern Guinea in West Africa with a population of around 191,000.

Kankan is the third largest city in the country and is located on the Milo River , a tributary of the Niger . It is the capital of the Kankan Prefecture and Kankan Region of the same name . The city is known for its university, religious students and mango trees.

history

The city was founded by the Soninke in the 17th century , became the capital of the Baté empire and an important trading center, especially for cola nuts . In 1879 Kankan was defeated by Samory Touré and taken by France in 1891 . In 1959 a national police school was established at Camp Soundiata, and in 1963 a university and institute for rice research.

Kankan has an airport and is about an eleven- hour drive from the state capital, Conakry , to which it was also connected by a 661-kilometer railway line that was in service from 1915 to about 1993.
