Hellmuth Gensicke

Hellmuth Gensicke (born June 29, 1917 in Alpenrod ; † September 17, 2006 in Wiesbaden ) was a German historian , archivist and director of the Hessian Central State Archives in Wiesbaden.

Life

Gensicke was the son of the pastor in Alpenrod . From 1935 he studied history , German , folklore and Protestant theology in Marburg , Königsberg , Bonn and Berlin . He had to interrupt his studies in 1939 because he was drafted into the Wehrmacht . As a result of a war wound in February 1944, his right leg was amputated. After the American captivity from March 1945 to June 1945, he resumed his studies in Marburg. Hellmuth Gensicke had been married since 1950.

After graduation, Gensicke became an assistant at the University of Mainz . In 1949 he switched to the Marburg Archive School . Parallel to the course leading to higher archive service, he was at the University of Marburg with a thesis on regional history of the Westerwald Dr. phil. PhD. His dissertation became the basis for the standard work of the same name on the regional history of the Westerwald that was published in 1958 and has not been outdated to this day . This book was reprinted in 1978 and 1999.

Gensicke came to the Hessian State Archives in Darmstadt on July 1, 1953 through various stations . In 1965 he moved to the Hessian Main State Archives in Wiesbaden, where he retired as its director in 1982. He was the author of more than 500 genealogical, folklore, church and regional history articles on the Westerwald, Taunus , Middle Rhine and Nassau .

Gensicke had been a member of the Nassau Classical and Historical Research Association since 1949 and was a member of its board from 1962. From 1952, for over 40 years, he was one of the most renowned co-authors of the association's Nassau Annals . Gensicke was a member of the Historical Commission for Nassau (since 1951), the Historical Commission Darmstadt (since 1955) and the Historical Commission for Hesse (since 1969). In April 1970 he was also elected a corresponding member of the Historical Commission for Westphalia . He was also a member of the Family History Society for Nassau and Frankfurt , of which he was chairman from 1978–1987.

Hellmuth Gensicke has received numerous awards for his historical work. In 1976, for example, he received the Heinrich Schlusnus Medal from the city of Braubach. In 1983 he was awarded the Eugen Heyn Medal of the Westerwald Association for his efforts to research the regional history of the Westerwald . Three years later he received the Cross of Merit on Ribbon of the Federal Republic of Germany.
