The Westerwald-Verein e. V. (WWV) was founded in Selters (Westerwald) in 1888 and today has around 7,000 members in 40 branch associations. It represents a homeland association for the entire geographical Westerwald . The main association supports and coordinates the efforts of its branch associations and performs supra- local tasks. It is entered in the register of associations of the Montabaur District Court (VR 485). The branch associations support the goals of the main association at the local level through largely independent initiatives and their own events.

The motto of the Westerwaldverein is “Hui! Wäller? - Allemol! ”This motto was selected from more than 60 entries in a competition in 1913. The winner was the local poet and farmer Adolf Weiß (1861–1938) from Mademühlen .

The meaning of the exclamation is explained by his poem: The storm wind taught me how to do it when it drives wildly over the heath, and "Wäller" we are "all", we defy the rain, the snow and the wind ...

The Westerwaldverein is a member of the Association of German Mountain and Hiking Associations and promotes hiking and tourism in a variety of ways. The main association offers multi-day hikes through the Westerwald, but also hiking trips abroad. The branch associations invite you to take part in regular hikes and excursions.

The association marks and maintains a hiking trail network of over 2,300 km, including the Druidensteig , the Limeswanderweg and the Westerwald-Steig . Many branch associations also maintain local circular hiking trails. The branch clubs in Aßlar, Herborn and Wetzlar-Niedergirmes also have their own hiking homes, where hikers can spend the night at low cost. The branch clubs in Blasbach, Dillenburg, Selters and Wißmar maintain hiking homes without overnight accommodation.

In addition, the Westerwaldverein sees timely homeland maintenance as one of its purposes. In the main and branch clubs, people are tasked with cultivating local history , folklore , customs and dialect , songs and folk dance and promoting them in publications. The association also intensively supports the Westerwald Landscape Museum in Hachenburg, of which he was a co-founder and sponsor and of which he is still a member.
