history
Numerous finds in the area of "Dorfwiesen" and "Am Scheid" indicate that this area was already there during the two millennia BC. Was settled and a Celtic settlement already existed here in the Hallstatt and Latène times .
With the construction of the Limes , the Romans not only built ramparts, moats and watchtowers, some of which are still clearly visible, but also a small fort , the outer foundation walls of which are only visible today as a reconstruction.
It is believed that Hillscheid was created between 959 and 994. The first written mention of Hiensceit (Hillscheid) appears in a document from Archbishop Ludolf of Trier (994-1008) around the year 1000. At the request of Abbess Mathilde zu Essen (974-1011), daughter of Duke Liudolf of Swabia and the granddaughter of King Otto I. and the Swabian Duke Hermann I , the Count of Engersgau and landlord of a large area around Montabaur (then "Humbach"), the Archbishop of Trier Ludolf left the tithes of Hana (Höhn), Hiensceit to the St. Florins Stift in Koblenz (Hillscheid), Mannechenrot (deserted Mangeroth) and to Agerin (Niederorien) and exchanged Aschebach (Eschelbach) for it. However, Hillscheid did not remain in possession of the monastery for long.
Vallendar was the mother church for the surrounding area and thus also for the Hillscheid area. Hillscheid belonged together with Vallendar to the Engersgau. In 773, Engersgau was first mentioned in a document. The Engersgau is identical to the Deanery Engers, to which Vallendar with Hillscheid and the other places of the parish belonged. The lordship of Vallendar came into the possession of Count Heinrich III in 1232 . from Sayn . When the Sayner inherited Wittgenstein, they called themselves Counts of Sayn-Wittgenstein . From 1363 onwards, they pledged parts of their rule to Kurtrier , who acquired full sovereignty in 1767. In the vicinity of Hillscheid were the two desolate places Cudilbach (Kühlbach) and Felderhusen (Pfarrhausen). They found their place in Hillscheid's coat of arms, represented by two jugs. The jugs in the coat of arms also refer to the local clay processing and in particular the jug-making trade, which shaped the working life of the place from the 17th century to the period after the Second World War. Hillscheid was largely destroyed in the Thirty Years War , but recovered relatively quickly and from 1683 had its own chapel, but remained part of the parish of Vallendar until 1812. With the conquest of the areas on the left bank of the Rhine by France and the smashing of the Electorate of Trier, the areas on the right of the Rhine, formerly Electorate of Trier and thus also Vallendar and Hillscheid, came to the Principality of Nassau-Weilburg in 1803 due to the Reichsdeputation Hauptschluss and in 1806 due to the Rhine Confederation Act to the Duchy of Nassau . After the fall of Napoleon, Vallendar came to the Kingdom of Prussia with the creation of the province of Grand Duchy of Lower Rhine in 1815 , while Hillscheid and Höhr remained with Nassau and were assigned to the Montabaur office .
After the conquest and occupation of the Duchy of Nassau by Prussia, Hillscheid became part of the Prussian province of Hessen-Nassau and, in 1867, through the reorganization of the administrative authorities, part of the newly created Unterwesterwaldkreis . During the Second World War Hillscheid was spared major war damage, although there was a rocket launch pad near Hillscheid (Hillscheider Stock), from which numerous V2 rockets were fired. Artillery and flak were also stationed in Hillscheid. At the end of the war, these fierce firefights were fought with the American artillery lying near Koblenz, with several deaths in Hillscheid.
In 1946 the Unterwesterwaldkreis and with it the community Hillscheid were assigned to the new state of Rhineland-Palatinate and initially belonged to the administrative district of Montabaur . Due to its dissolution in 1968, the administrative reform of 1971 and the district reform of 1974, Hillscheid is now part of the Höhr-Grenzhausen community and is part of the Westerwaldkreis formed from the Lower and Upper Westerwald districts .
