Hermann I. (Swabia)

Hermann I († December 10, 949 ) from the noble family of the Conradines was the first of his family to be Duke of Swabia from 926 to 949 .

Life

Hermann was a son of the Lotharingian Duke Gebhard and a cousin of the East Franconian King Konrad I.

When Duke Burchard II of Swabia fell in Italy in 926 , the fight for the - so far not hereditary - title of Duke of Swabia flared up again; this was decided by King Heinrich I by assigning the duchy to an outside relative at the Diet of Worms in the same year - and thus finally made it clear that the king was responsible for the investiture of the dukes of Swabia and not the nobility of the country .

Heinrich designated the Franconian and Conradin Hermann as duke.

Hermann married Burchard's widow Regelinda and thus opposed the front of the Swabian nobles that was emerging because of the king's approach.

However, Hermann had to make further concessions: St. Gallen was finally placed under the protection of the Roman-German king, the diocese of Chur was granted imperial property that the duke had previously used himself.

On the other hand, due to the political interests of the Ottonians, the country advanced to become the linchpin of European power politics: rule over the Alpine passes supported interests in Italy, rule over the Burgundian Gate supported interests in Burgundy .

In addition to his title of duke, Hermann was Count in Lahngau in 939 and Count in Auelgau in 948 ; In 947 he became a lay abbot of Echternach and founded the St. Florin Monastery in Koblenz .

Together with his brother Udo I. von der Wetterau, Hermann was one of Otto's closest advisers. Otto's son Liudolf was married to Hermann's only daughter and heiress Ida (Ita) († May 17, 986) at the turn of the year 947/948 .

After Hermann's death on December 10, 949, King Otto the Great transferred the duchy to his own son Liudolf at the Reichstag in Worms in 950.

Hermann was in the - - now defunct Erasmus 's Church Chapel Monastery of Reichenau on the Lake Constance situated island Reichenau buried.
