Oberrod is a municipality in the Westerwaldkreis in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the Verbandsgemeinde Rennerod .

Geographical location

The community is located in the Westerwald on the border with Hesse . The next larger cities are Siegen (34 kilometers north), Wetzlar (27 kilometers east) and Limburg an der Lahn (24 kilometers south). The Lasterbach flows through the village .

Municipal council

The municipal council in Oberrod consists of twelve council members, who were elected by majority vote in the local elections on May 26, 2019 , and the honorary local mayor as chairman.

Thomas Wüst became the local mayor of Oberrod on July 26, 2019. In the direct election on May 26, 2019, he was elected for five years with 88.32% of the vote.

Wüst's predecessor Klaus Laube had held the office of mayor for 15 years.

Justification for the coat of arms: The colors blue and gold indicate the longstanding affiliation to the Duchy of Nassau , the green stands for the wealth of forests and the earlier agricultural orientation of the village. The silver wave bar symbolizes the Lasterbach flowing through the village. The black chapel is the “St. Josefskapelle ”, the oldest and most important building in Oberrod. The clearing hoe finally establishes the connection to the foundation of the place, a clearing, and thus the connection with the place name.

Cultural monuments

In Oberrod, the former town hall, the Catholic Church of St. Joseph and a half-timbered house built around 1700 are under monument protection.

Natural monuments

  • At the chapel in Oberrod there is an old linden tree, which has been designated as a natural monument since 1977 (registered under ND-7143-458).
  • To the northeast of the locality, on the former communal pasture, is the so-called "Hutebuche" ( Fagus sylvatica ), which has been under protection since 1985 (registered under ND-7143-468).

Regular events

  • One of the oldest clubs is the Schützenverein St. Hubertus 1910 Oberrod eV The club organizes a four-day shooting festival every year at Whitsun .
  • The Backes and Brunnenfest takes place in mid-August. As a regional specialty, the “Flappeskuchen” is baked in the traditional way in a wood oven.
  • The court and syringe festival takes place annually on Corpus Christi and is organized by the Oberrod volunteer fire brigade.
