Location of the local community Elbingen in the Westerwaldkreis | ||
Elbingen is a municipality in the Westerwaldkreis in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the Wallmerod Association .
geography
The community is located in the Westerwald between Montabaur and Westerburg . Elbingen is located in the middle of a forest area with many hiking and cycling trails. The neighboring communities are Härtlingen , Hahn am See and Moravia . The border to Hesse runs about six kilometers east of the village.
The Spiesmühle residential area also belongs to Elbingen .
history
Elbingen was first mentioned in 1383 as Elmennyngen and is located in the area of the former Niederlahngau , the territory of the Nassau counts. The place name is derived from the ancient name Alaman , which suggests an early Germanic settlement here. Only later did the name Elbingen lean on the name of the Elb (also Elbbach ), the important Westerwald river that flows through the district. In the document from 1383 Friedrich von Elmennyngen is mentioned, but no coat of arms of this lower noble family has survived. Other families owned here such as von Hattert, von Reifenberg (coat of arms red / silver) and von Dehrn. The long affiliation to the Nassau sovereignty was interrupted in 1564 when the parish of Salz , including Elbingen, came to the Electorate of Trier . Due to the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss , Elbingen fell to Nassau-Weilburg in 1803 and belonged to the Duchy of Nassau from 1806 to 1866 , then in Prussia to the province of Hesse-Nassau . In the local coat of arms the golden lion with red armor, the heraldic animal of the Nassau counts, stands in blue for the predominantly Nassau time of Elbingen.
The oil mill on the Kälberbach is mentioned next to the village in 1739 , but it was already called the Spießmühle in 1786 and is still living below the village today. The spit mill, which has been shut down, symbolizes the half red mill wheel in silver in the local coat of arms. Red and silver are the colors of the coat of arms of the Electorate of Trier and they testify to the former sovereignty and the affiliation of Elbingen to the "Trierschland". The wavy strip, divided in silver and blue, stands for the Elbbach , the Kälberbach and also for the reservoir, which was partially created in the Elbingen district in 1967 and belongs to a large leisure facility on the Elbinger Ufer. The district of Elbingen has always been characterized by agriculture and has long been the main source of income for the Elbingen residents. The mill wheel is also a symbol for agriculture, the products of which were processed by the spit mill.
In addition to a small amount of basalt and lignite mining , mud bricks were also burned in the 19th century . The Elbingen residents also burned their stoneware , i.e. jugs, etc. for household use. This custom gave rise to the village name Elwinger Kriielcher , which the Elbingers have kept to this day and proudly wear it. The village name passed down in the vernacular is documented in the local coat of arms by the silver jug in the paws of the Nassau lion.
From May 1, 1969, it formed a municipality with Moravia , which was named Elbingen-Moravia . However, this merger was dissolved on January 1, 1994.

Since 1994 Elbingen has had its own municipal coat of arms, in which the symbolism is reflected as follows: In the local coat of arms, the golden, red armored lion, the heraldic animal of the Nassau counts, stands for the predominantly Nassau time of Elbingen in blue. The spit mill, whose operation has been shut down, symbolizes the half red mill wheel in silver. The wavy strip, divided in silver and blue, stands for the Elbbach, the Kälberbach and also for the reservoir (Waldsee), which was partially created in the Elbingen district in 1967 and belongs to a large leisure facility on the Elbinger Ufer. The district of Elbingen has always been characterized by agriculture and has long been the main source of income for the Elbingen residents. The mill wheel is also a symbol for agriculture. In addition to a small amount of basalt and lignite mining , mud bricks were also burned in the 19th century . The Elbingen also burned their "stoneware", i.e. jugs, etc. for household use. This custom gave rise to the village name "Elwinger Krijelcher", which the Elbingers have kept to this day and proudly wear it. The village name that has been passed down in the vernacular is documented in the local coat of arms by the silver jug in the paws of the Nassau lion.
