Memorial cross at the accident site

Tug of war in 1995

On June 4, 1995, during a tug of war with 650 young boy scouts at the federal center, an accident occurred when the rope broke. Two children died, 102 sustained injuries, some of them serious. A relatively thin synthetic rope was used, and no information was available about its load limits. The organizers had not even considered the possibility of overloading the rope, especially in the case of a children's tug of war.

During the court proceedings it was found that the organizers had violated their duty of care because they had not found out about the suitability of the rope and had not taken any precautions for the event that the event was to be stopped immediately. However, since the danger to life was not foreseeable, those responsible were convicted of negligent bodily harm, not of negligent homicide.

A memorial cross near the accident site commemorates the two children who were killed.
