history

In 1282 Astert was first mentioned as asterode in a document from the Marienstatt monastery . As a clearing village , it was likely to have originated in the 10th century or before. In the 18th century the place name Asterode abraded itself to "Astert". Due to the many roof slate pits , a number of Leyendecker were resident in Astert from the 16th to 18th centuries . A former roof slate pit ( Hardt ) existed until around 1911 and was finally abandoned after 1945. In 1739 a winter school was first recorded in the village.

After the introduction of the Reformation in the county of Sayn , to which Astert was one, the inhabitants were first Lutheran and later reformed . There was tension in the village due to immigrant Catholics from the Bergisches Land and Wildenburger Land , who were favored by the Marienstatt Monastery and the Catholic Count Salentin Ernst von Manderscheid as sovereign of the County of Sayn-Hachenburg , to which Astert had belonged since the 17th century. Only after decades, mostly through marriage, did they become fully entitled citizens. A process at the Imperial Court of Justice in Wetzlar in 1732 brought them complete religious freedom. The constant disputes between the religious groups were also expressed in spatial separation, while Catholics were found almost exclusively in the lower village , while the Reformed settled in the upper village that was now emerging . In 1793 the entire place had 20 houses with 125 inhabitants. After the coalition wars, the population became impoverished, and poverty persisted in the Nassau period since 1799. In 1866 the place came to the Kingdom of Prussia and from 1868 it belonged to the province of Hessen-Nassau and the Oberwesterwaldkreis . In 1926 the first school was opened in Astert. The slate mines, which were in operation from 1730 to 1760 and from 1840 to 1860, were economically significant. The bridge over the Nister, built in 1894, testifies to the beginning prosperity of the place.

In 1985, Astert was voted the most beautiful place in Rhineland-Palatinate in the competition Our village should be more beautiful .

Astert Coat of Arms
Blazon : "Coat of arms divided by a silver oblique left wavy bar , diagonally crossed above in red, silver roofer's hammer and hoe , below in blue three golden earsgrowingout of the edge of the shield ."
The reason for the coat of arms: The ears of wheat symbolize the importance of agriculture in the past centuries, the hoe indicates the old place name Asterode as a clearing village and the roofer's hammer indicates the numerous Leyendecker and slate pits in the area that were located here in the 16th and 17th centuries .

The blue field refers to the former affiliation to the Duchy of Nassau (1806–1866), the red field to the centuries-long affiliation to the County of Sayn and Sayn-Hachenburg (until 1799). The silver wavy ribbon symbolizes the Great Nister .
