Berzhahn is a municipality in the Westerwaldkreis in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the community of Westerburg .

geography

Berzhahn is located on the northern slope of the extensive forest area four kilometers southeast of Westerburg. To Berzhahn includes the living space granulator.

history

The first documentary mention of Berzhahn goes back to 1338. Berzhahn had a Heimberger by 1596 at the latest, and a mayor by 1814 at the latest. In 1811 a school was first mentioned in the village. A noble family von Berzhahn is mentioned for the first time in 1403 and last time in 1589. The only significant member seems to have been Peter von Westerburg, from 1520 to 1529 Stadtschultheiß in Siegen.

In 1570 a recently rebuilt mill on the Elbbach near Berzhahn is mentioned for the first time. Around 1600 it was moved to the Berzhahner Steg. In addition, there was a cutting (saw) mill captured in 1619, as well as an oil and millet mill, which are only mentioned as abandoned around 1800. 1525 woolen weavers and 1735 potters are guaranteed to be traders.

Berzhahn belonged to the Westerburg rule until the beginning of the 19th century , from 1702 as part of the Willmenrod court, and in 1806 came to the Grand Duchy of Berg in the course of the formation of the Rhine Confederation under Napoleon . In 1813 Berzhahn came temporarily to the House of Orange-Nassau and as a result of the Congress of Vienna in 1815 to the Duchy of Nassau . Under the Nassau administration Berzhahn the community to belong Standesherrschaft Leiningen-Westerburg in office Rennerod . In 1858 there were 126 families and 419 residents in Berzhahn. In 1866 the Duchy of Nassau and with it Berzhahn became part of the Kingdom of Prussia .

On October 5, 1972, a German Army helicopter of the type Bell UH-1D was rammed by a Starfighter over Berzhahn and crashed. The fighter jet was able to fly as far as Büchel Air Base and land there. Three people died in this accident.

Kalsberg

The Kalsberg, which no longer exists today, was probably located at the current boundary between Berzhahn and Wilsenroth. The place is mentioned for the first time in 879 and after 1270 only as part of field names.

Watzenhahn

A settlement of Watzenhahn is mentioned in 1270 and in 1684 the Fritzenhahn farm, which had recently been built in its place. This was abandoned in 1726 and probably torn down after it was described as a refuge for gypsies and thieves the year before.

Municipal council

The local council in Berzhahn consists of eight council members, who were elected in a majority vote in the local elections on May 26, 2019 , and the honorary local mayor as chairman. Until 2009, the municipal council consisted of twelve council members, as the number of inhabitants, which is relevant according to local electoral law, was over 500 in the previous election.

Markus Hof became the local mayor of Berzhahn in 2009. In the direct election on May 26, 2019, he was confirmed in his office for another five years with a share of the vote of 82.56%.
