history

In the 11th century, a castle was founded on a 435 m high basalt knoll to secure the westward running Cologne-Frankfurter-Strasse .

In 1220 a Wigand von Weltersburg (Weltirsberch) was mentioned as a witness in a document from Heinrich von Isenburg . Half of the castle in Weltersburg belonged to the Counts of Sayn , the other half was owned by the Lords of Isenburg. Burgmannen were among others those of Ottenstein, that of Reifenberg , that of Brambach, that of Grauesel and that of Neuroth.

In a deed dated December 16, 1314, Ludwig granted Bayer Weltersburg town rights . Weltersburg had a city court, but there is no evidence of a city market .

In 1331 Gerlach von Isenburg gave his allodial part of the castle and its accessories to Archbishop Balduin of Trier as a fief and made it an open house against everyone except the Counts of Sayn. In 1354 a Saynian bailiff had his seat in Weltersburg. In 1356 Weltersburg came to the Westerburg as a dowry . In a feud with the Counts of Katzenelnbogen in 1413, the citizens of Weltersburg were damaged and Weltersburg was taken. In 1423 Weltersburg was conquered again and in 1425 a truce was established. By redeeming various pledges, the Westerburg rulership was able to take possession of all of Weltersburg in 1489.

Weltersburg Castle was apparently already in poor condition in 1581 and was completely in ruins by 1670. Around 1552 Philipp von Reifenberg had the so-called Reiffenberger Schlösschen built.

religion

73% of the residents of Weltersburg are Catholic, 10% Protestant. The Catholics belong to the parish Liebfrauen in Westerburg in the Diocese of Limburg , which maintains a branch church in Weltersburg. The Willmenrod parish of the Evangelical Church in Hesse and Nassau is responsible for the Evangelicals .

Culture and sights

A lookout point has been set up at the old castle on the Küppel, from which you have a good view of the Elbbachtal all the way to the Taunus .

Buildings

To the west of the town center is the Reifenberger Schlösschen , a stately residential building in which Field Marshal Blücher was a guest. The picturesque assembly of the 17th century with a late Gothic core was from 1384 to 1671 Burgmannensitz of a line of those von Reifenberg.

In the center of the village is the symbol of Weltersburg, a wind turbine that was put into operation in 1912 for pumping water in order to make the place independent from the neighboring communities. On the edge of Weltersburg is the St. Leonhard Chapel, which is the destination of a rider procession on Thanksgiving .
