Atzelgift is a local community in the Westerwaldkreis in Rhineland-Palatinate , which is part of the Hachenburg community.

Geographical location

The community is located in the Westerwald , in the “ Kroppacher Schweiz ” local recreation area between the regional centers of Koblenz (60 km), Limburg (49 km) and Siegen (38 km). The closest medium-sized center is the city of Hachenburg . The Kleine Nister flows through the 287 m high place . Limbach lies northwest of Atzelgift , Luckenbach in the northeast and Streithausen in the southwest .

The Atzelgifter Mühle residential area belongs to Atzelgift.

history

In 1396 Atzelgift was first mentioned in a document as Hatzelgufte . Via Atzelguft , the name developed into "Atzelgift". The name is derived from Atzel ( magpie ) and Guft (shouting, shouting) and describes a remote place "where the magpies call". However, the legend of a Count Atzel and his daughter's dowry is false.

In 1579 Atzelgift had nine houses, in 1624 14 fireplaces, 1669 13 smokers, 1714 28 men and a widow, and in 1760 116 and 1818 123 inhabitants. The remains of the oil mills still bear witness to the industrial past of the place , one of them about 100 m west of the outskirts on the Kleine Nister. It was built in 1805 and was in operation at least until 1819; Today only the moat can be seen, which branches off about 100 m upstream from the Kleiner Nister. Another former oil mill was about 500 m west of Atzelgift, which must have been built around 1870; The mill ditch and the location of the mill can still be identified in the area. Only the field name “Bei der Ollichsmüll” has survived.

There were several iron ore mines northwest of the village; On the south-eastern outskirts of the village on the Kleine Nister there was originally an ironworks that used the iron ore present in the surrounding area; it was still in use in 1686, but no longer in 1691. The field names "Im Hammer" and "Auf dem Hüttenstück" refer to this iron processing. In 1697 a mill was built in place of the ironworks; However, this was demolished in 1909 and a new mill was built, which today only serves to generate electricity.

For the first time a Catholic winter school is recorded in the village for the year 1701.
