It is located 10.5 km east-southeast of Montabaur , 5.5 km southwest of Hadamar and 7.5 km (as the crow flies ) northwest of Limburg an der Lahn . The Erbach and the smaller streams of the Willbach, which flows into the Fischbach and the Sandbach, both of which in turn flow into the Erbach , flow through it . A few kilometers away are the Nassau Nature Park in the southwest and the Taunus Nature Park in the east . The north-north-western neighboring municipality is Obererbach .

Landscape and geology

The landscape of Niedererbach is structured by the Erbach, in whose valley, which runs from north to south-east and is lined with wooded trees, the village is located and into which the Fischbach and Sandbach flow from the right. The valley cuts of these streams further structure the terrain. The subsoil consists primarily of basalt , andesite , slate and greywacke .

history

First documentary mention of Niedererbach on May 12, 1291
Parish church Niedererbach 1725–1904
Niedererbach parish church

Niedererbach was mentioned for the first time in a document from Archbishop Theodoric II of Trier , which confirms a gift from Siegfrid von Runkel to the Seligenstatt monastery near Seck . The exact date is unclear, but the period from 1213 to 1215 is assumed. The first unequivocal dating is possible for a document dated May 12, 1291. In it a pastor named Friedrich and the parish Erlebach are mentioned, who certify a legal transaction with the Commander and the Brothers of the Teutonic Order in Koblenz. The original of the certificate is in the central archive of the German Order in Vienna . The Niedererbach community has had a copy of the certificate since 2006.

For the late Middle Ages, rights of the Lords of Limburg have been documented in Niedererbach , which passed to the County of Diez , which had already ruled the country when the family died out . With the dissolution of the County of Diez, Niedererbach fell to Kurtrier in 1564 . The lower jurisdiction lay with the court of the neighboring parish court in Nentershausen, the higher jurisdiction initially at the old court and archidakonate location Dietkirchen , from 1564 on with the Electoral Trier court in Diez.

A looting by mercenary troops from the Eighty Years' War is guaranteed for 1594 , in which seven buildings were burned down and one resident was killed. Until the end of the 18th century the place belonged to the Electorate of Trier Montabaur . On September 19, 1795, French troops attacked the place as part of the First Coalition War . They shot the Heimberger (mayor) and five other residents and plundered Niedererbach for three days. Several looting by troops of different origins followed by 1797. By the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss 1803 Niedererbach, like the rest of the right bank of the Electorate of Trier , was assigned to the Prince of Nassau-Weilburg and from 1806 after the establishment of the Napoleonic Rhine Confederation belonged to the Duchy of Nassau . Under the Nassau administration, the place initially belonged to the Meudt office and until 1867 to the Wallmerod office . After the so-called German War , the region came to the Kingdom of Prussia in 1866 and to the new province of Hesse-Nassau in 1868 , Niedererbach was now a municipality in the Unterwesterwaldkreis .

Since the Niedererbach people used to know how to make pipes from willow twigs, they are still referred to today as "Erwocher Peifscher".

In 1913 the place received water pipes and the first telephone connection, ten years later electricity. American troops arrived on the evening of March 26, 1945. In 1972 Niedererbach became part of the Montabaur Association . The community of Niedererbach has had its own town hall since December 2010. The half-timbered house, a so-called day laborer's house, which has been a listed building since the early 1980s, dates from the early 19th century and was recently completely run down. In 2006 the community acquired it from a community of heirs. It was restored inside and outside from 2008 to 2010 by the support association “Our village has a future” founded in 2006 in cooperation with the Niedererbach community. Nothing was changed in the layout of the rooms, so that the structure of the roughly 200-year-old house has been preserved inside. According to the specifications of the monument protection, it was completely slated outside. This also indirectly reminds of the former slate mining in Niedererbach.

In May 2011, the Niedererbach community took part in the nationwide competition “ Our village has a future ” and came second in the main class at the district level. She had thus qualified for the regional decision, in which in June 2011 a middle place was placed among 20 participating municipalities.

Population development

The oldest known information about the Niedererbach population dates back to 1684 and reports about 15 fire places in the village. In 1787 there were 196 inhabitants, in 1833 there were 299. In 1870 the population was 475, 1903 450, 1913 416, 1921 419. The last survey before the Second World War dates from 1936 and shows 537 Niedererbachers. In 1956 there were again 600. By 1980 the population increased to 700, by 1990 to 840. In 2001 there were 993 inhabitants and in 2004 1005.

Church history

In terms of church, Niedererbach was initially part of the neighboring parish of Nentershausen. Since a separate pastor is already mentioned for 1291, a separate parish should have already existed at this point in time. However, the place continued to belong to the parish of Nentershausen. A parish church of its own for 1320 can be proven with certainty. The Reformation was never introduced in Niedererbach.

In 2006 the community celebrated the 100th fair . This most important village festival takes place every year on the last weekend in August and commemorates the consecration of the parish church of St. Katharina in 1906. Part of the church tower is much older and probably dates from around 1200. In front of the current church there was a baroque church built in 1738, about the size of today's aisle . By 1892 at the latest, a church building fund was active to build a new church. The old church was demolished in 1904, but the steeple remained standing. Only the upper third was broken off and renewed.

Architect Jakob Fachinger from Limburg emerged as the winner for the new building from an “architectural competition” in 1903. The construction plans were submitted to the Episcopal Ordinariate in Limburg and the Royal District Office in Westerburg for review and approval on February 1, 1904 . A positive decision was made in each case.

On July 27, 1904, the demolition of the old church began by master mason Sellmann from Limburg. The cost was 230  marks . At the same time, the tender for the construction of the new church in the "Nassauer Boten" took place. 80 offers were received in response to the invitation to tender. Building contractor Jakob Eufinger from Elz was awarded the contract for 25,387.77 marks. The order included earthworks and masonry, delivery of building materials, stone carving, carpentry, roofing, plumbing, locksmithing and blacksmithing.

In September 1904 the excavation work for the new parish church began. The foundation stone was laid on May 14, 1905 and the topping-out ceremony was celebrated on August 10, 1905 . The shell was completed in December 1905. In May 1906 the interior plastering, the installation of the windows and the interior fittings began. On August 19, 1906, the new church building was solemnly consecrated by Bishop Dominikus Willi .

"

The Erlenzweig refers to the interpretation of the place name Erbach from Erlenbach. The splitting of the waves draws attention to the scenic location of the place in the Erbachtal. Niedererbach volunteer fire brigade

A fire brigade in Niedererbach was first mentioned in 1869. At that time it belonged to the Prussian province of Hessen-Nassau . In 1872 a fire fighting association was established for the localities of Nentershausen and Nomborn . A compulsory fire brigade was appointed on October 14, 1953 , as coverage in the event of an emergency could not be guaranteed due to the full-time employment of the honorary members. The compulsory fire brigade was the forerunner of today's volunteer fire brigade . All male residents between the ages of 18 and 60 were members. On May 30, 1970, it was decided to establish a volunteer fire brigade to ensure fire protection as an organized unit with appropriate equipment . 19 members joined the volunteer fire brigade. Equipment was financed by donations from the population.

The railway bridge west of the village has been a listed building since 1992. The application was justified as follows: “With the Staffel – Siershahn – Altenkirchen railway line opened to traffic in 1884, the late opening of the Westerwald by the railway began with the inauguration of the 'Unterwesterwaldbahn'. In the course of the route, the railway crosses the Sandbachtal near Niedererbach with a towering, six-arched viaduct. This is made from local basalt and trachyte as well as from brick and has, as an ornamental design, slightly cantilevered, stepped flight candles with gargoyles as well as a cantilevered cornice and an original cast iron railing. "

The roof slate field "Theodorusfund" extends over the districts of Görgeshausen, Nentershausen and Niedererbach. In 1886 the field was transferred to the "Niedererbach Slate Union". It was the livelihood for numerous residents.
