The Unterwesterwaldkreis was a district in Rhineland-Palatinate . He was based in Montabaur .

geography

At the beginning of 1969 the district bordered clockwise in the north, beginning with the Oberwesterwaldkreis (in Rhineland-Palatinate), the Limburg district (in Hesse ) and the Unterlahnkreis , the Loreleykreis , the independent city of Koblenz and the districts of Koblenz and Neuwied ( all in turn in Rhineland-Palatinate).

history

The Unterwesterwaldkreis was created by the Prussian ordinance of February 22, 1867 after the annexation of the Duchy of Nassau by Prussia in the course of the German War from the Nassau office of Montabaur and most of the Nassau office of Selters .

The province of Hessen-Nassau was divided into the two administrative districts of Kassel for the former Electorate of Hesse and Wiesbaden for the former Duchy of Nassau. The administrative districts were again divided into administrative districts.

In 1886, the former Nassau Office Wallmerod left the Unterwesterwaldkreis and became part of the new Westerburg district . On October 1, 1932, as part of a Prussian regional reform, the Westerburg district was dissolved and its southern communities returned to the Unterwesterwaldkreis.

In 1944 the province of Hessen-Nassau was divided, with the Unterwesterwaldkreis being incorporated into the province of Nassau . After the Second World War , the district became part of the French occupation zone . This was later divided into several German states , whereby the Unterwesterwaldkreis came to Rhineland-Palatinate . The responsible administrative district was Montabaur until 1968 and then the administrative district Koblenz .

On November 7, 1970, the Marienhausen community moved to the Neuwied district . At the same time, the community of Düringen moved from the Oberwesterwaldkreis to the Unterwesterwaldkreis and was incorporated into Wölferlingen . On January 29, 1971, the communities of Niedersayn and Sainerholz also moved from the Oberwesterwaldkreis to the Unterwesterwaldkreis. Overall, the regional reforms that began in Rhineland-Palatinate in 1969 reduced the number of municipalities in the district from 90 to 78 by 1974.

The Unterwesterwaldkreis was dissolved on March 16, 1974. The municipality of Arzbach came to the Rhein-Lahn district and the municipality of Stromberg was incorporated into the town of Bendorf in the district of Mayen-Koblenz . All other communities together with the also dissolved Oberwesterwaldkreis formed the new Westerwald district . Just a few months later, on August 1, 1974, it was renamed Westerwaldkreis .
