The Verbandsgemeinde was newly formed on April 22, 1972 on the basis of the Twelfth State Law on Administrative Simplification in the State of Rhineland-Palatinate of March 1, 1972.

The local council Selters (Westerwald) consists of 32 honorary council members, who in the local elections on May 26, 2019 in a personalized proportional representation were elected, and the full-time mayor as chairman.

mayor
Klaus Müller (FWG) became mayor of the Selters community on March 15, 1999. In the direct election on September 14, 2014, he was confirmed in his office for a further eight years with 91.5% of the votes.
