history

In 1190 the place was first mentioned as Rachdorf in connection with a Rorich von Rechdorf, who called himself Freirachdorf after his seat of power. The origin of the place is traced back to early Franconian settlements. The original name Rachdorf means village of Racho and has undergone many changes over time. So the place was called Maroraychdorf in the early 14th century, a hundred years later Matraichdorff around 1426 and Marck (t) rachdorf (f) in the years 1513/1550 with the meaning "on the Mark (border) lying Rachdorf" in contrast to the neighboring places Freirachdorf and Brückrachdorf. The meaning of the addition was lost in the following centuries, and the place name was first mentioned in 1739, after the parish church of the Assumption of Mary, in 1325, but its style dates back to the 12th century, when it was changed to Mariae Rachdorf and later to Marienrachdorf .

The old Church of the Assumption of Mary had to give way to a new building of the same name, consecrated in 1853, whereby the old church and defense tower from the 14th century with a renewed upper part in the classical style was retained. A cruciform nave in late classicist style is attached to the Romanesque west tower; Inside, round arches separate the broad transverse arms and the west gallery. The interior could be furnished with a remarkable furnishing from secularized monastery property ; Two side altar pieces (around 1760) in walnut veneer were brought here from the Carthusian monastery in Mainz ; The Marienstatt Monastery gave up seven late baroque wooden statues (18th century) .

Court and parish , consisting of the villages of Marienrachdorf, Krümmel, Maroth, Trierischhausen, Sessenhausen with the court of Kutscheid and Marienhausen, were subordinate to the Lords of Isenburg as sovereigns, most recently the Counts of Isenburg-Grenzau until 1664. After the death of Count Ernst von Isenburg -Grenzau died the line, and Marienrachdorf fell to the Kurtrierische Office Herschbach , 1803 with this to the Principality of Nassau-Weilburg and 1806 to the Duchy of Nassau . The offices of Herschbach and Selters were combined in 1817 to form the new district of Selters (until 1865). In 1866 Marienrachdorf fell to Prussia and one year later became part of the newly formed Unterwesterwaldkreis . In 1882 Marienrachdorf was connected to the railway network, which promoted local quartzite mining . At the end of the 1970s, the quarrying was largely exhausted, the recultivated area returned to the property of the municipality in 1982.

After the Second World War , the Unterwesterwaldkreis became part of the newly formed state of Rhineland-Palatinate in 1946 . In the course of the territorial reorganization of the administration, the municipality of Marienrachdorf was assigned to the Selters (Westerwald) municipality in April 1972 . Since March 16, 1974 Marienrachdorf belongs to the Westerwaldkreis .
