Bilkheim is a municipality in the Westerwaldkreis in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the Wallmerod Association .
geography
Bilkheim is located about 13 km northeast of Montabaur in a valley basin, directly on the border with Hesse. The Schafbach rises above the village, flows laterally past Bilkheim and flows into the Walmeroder Bach , which in turn flows into the Salzbach shortly afterwards . The residential area at Schloss Neuroth also belongs to Bilkheim .
history
Bilkheim was first mentioned in a document as Bullincheym by the noble Dietrich von Brambach zu Neurod in 1345.
In 1664 the moated castle Hof Neuroth was built as the widow's seat of the Walderdorff family . A tombstone with the place name Bilkheim was found from 1695.
In 1828 the first urn graves from the Hallstatt culture (700 to 500 BC) were discovered on the "Heide". These grave finds prove that there must have been a settlement in the Bilkheim area well over 2000 years ago. Some of the grave finds are exhibited or archived in the Wiesbaden Museum.
In 1901 a school was built in Bilkheim, which is now privately owned. A railway line, which has since been dismantled to a cycle and hiking trail, was built in 1910 and connected with Westerburg and Montabaur .
The old houses along the main street are mostly bought and lived in by "new" Bilkheim residents. The descendants of the "old" Bilkheimers move out of the town center and build in the adjacent building areas.
The original religion in Bilkheim was 100% Roman Catholic until around 50 years ago. Due to the advancing globalization, however, many faiths are now represented in Bilkheim.
