The Westerburg station was the junction station of today disused railway line Herborn-Montabaur (also Westerwald cross train called) and still operated Limburg-Altenkirchen railway (Upper Westerwaldbahn) in Westerburg in Westerwald district .
history
The station together with the corresponding section of the Oberwesterwaldbahn began operations on October 1, 1886. The reception building of the station was completed in the 1887th On July 16, 1907, the branch of the Westerwaldquerbahn from Westerburg to Herborn went into operation, on June 1, 1910 that in the direction of Montabaur . The station was then an island station . There were a number of connections to local industrial companies .
On May 31, 1981, passenger traffic on both branches of the Westerwaldquerbahn going out in Westerburg was stopped. Since that time, the service for travelers at the train station has also been increasingly restricted, later goods handling was also abandoned and the track systems to the east of the reception building were removed, so that the remaining track systems came to the edge and the station lost its status as an island station. The freight direction Montabaur was set in 1985, towards Rennerod 1995. As part of the railway reform the station building was privatized.
Current state
The station still has four tracks , two of which are platform tracks . Track 2 is the main platform at the reception building, while track 3 has an intermediate platform that can only be reached at ground level. The station building houses the Railway Poster Museum . The two double-track former locomotive sheds in the north of the station have been used by the Westerwald railway enthusiasts since 2003 . There is a park-and-ride facility and a bike-and-ride facility at Westerburg train station.
traffic
Today the station is served by trains of the Hessische Landesbahn GmbH (HLB) , operating area Dreiländerbahn in the direction of Limburg (Lahn) and Siegen by the line RB90 (Westerwald-Sieg-Bahn). In addition, buses run from here to the region, including the Rhein-Mosel-Bus -Line 116 (Montabaur Bahnhof / FOM - Westerburg - Rennerod Busbf. / Bad Marienberg ), which partly runs along the disused Westerwaldquerbahn . There is a park and ride facility and a bike and ride facility in front of the train station . The transport services are carried out on behalf of the regional rail passenger transport association Rhineland-Palatinate North (SPNV Nord) and are carried out according to the Rhineland-Palatinate cycle . On the section between Westerburg and Siegen, which mostly runs in Rhineland-Palatinate, since the timetable change in December 2014, there has been a general hourly service from Monday to Sunday, with even closer intervals during rush hour. In order to be able to guarantee connections to Cologne and Frankfurt at the Au (Sieg) and Limburg stations, most trains initially end in Westerburg, there are only a few continuous journeys between Limburg and Au (Sieg). The tariff of the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Mosel (VRM) has also applied in the Westerwaldkreis since January 1, 2017 .
